Our History
The Egan family name has been synonymous with business in Bolton, Ontario, for over nine decades … ever since 1913 when Paul Egan’s grandfather, William R. Egan, took over the town’s only funeral business. Continuing with that tradition, Paul and his family expanded to Orangeville when they purchased Baxter and Giles Funeral Home in October 1997 becoming the Egan Funeral Home Baxter & Giles Chapel. Paul’s sister Deborah and her husband Hal both work at the Baxter and Giles Chapel. She is the office manager and the couple lives on the premises.
The Orangeville property that now houses Egan Funeral Home Baxter and Giles Chapel has a history spanning over 100 years. Almost fifty years after the original house was built, Wilfred and Bertha Turner converted the main floor into Orangeville’s first funeral establishment. Their son John took over the family business and when he retired in 1966, he sold the business to Peter Baxter and Fred Giles. When Peter and Fred decided to retire, after 30 years in Orangeville, Paul Egan became their logical successor. Fred, Peter and Paul were all committed to keeping Baxter and Giles as a family-run business. Peter and Fred had known Paul for many years and knew that he and his staff would provide the same professional and personal attention that so many of their Orangeville families have come to rely upon.
Today, Egan Funeral Home Baxter and Giles Chapel is independently owned and operated by the Egan family and is Orangeville’s foremost funeral establishment, drawing families locally as well as from the surrounding counties. Egan Funeral Home is a distinguished member of the Independent Selected Funeral Homes – an international group representing over 1600 independently owned and operated funeral homes. Membership in this organization is by invitation only, and is extended to funeral homes only after a thorough evaluation of their reputation, characteristics, service and facilities. Membership carries with it the responsibility to maintain the highest levels of professional conduct and service. For almost 100 years and four generations, the Egan family has remained committed to serving area families with the highest standards of experience, compassion, diligence and professionalism.
In 2006 the Egan family welcomed Stephen Elliott as Manager of the funeral home bringing with him over 25 years of professional funeral experience. Steve resides in Orangeville with his wife Sheryl and their 3 grown children. He is very involved in Orangeville Baptist Church, and in the community. He serves on the Mayors’ Senior’s Advisory Committee and is currently President of the Greater Dufferin Area Chamber of Commerce after serving as Vice President and on many committees prior to that. In 2008 his work was recognized as he won the “Chamber Member Excellence Award”. He is member of the Greater Dufferin Estate Planning Council and also sits on the Community Liaison Committee at our local hospital. He is passionate about providing the very best in personalized professional funeral service to this community and will go out of his way to make sure that each family’s expectations are not only met, but exceeded. His philosophy has always been to treat everyone with the compassion and respect they deserve just like he would like to be treated. He personally guarantees every families satisfaction with the services provided. When he is not at work or a community meeting, Steve enjoys a round of golf, going for a walk, or playing hockey with his friends.
