Carmel Mary Nolan (née Curley)
August 23, 2011
Carmel passed away peacefully in the presence of family on Sunday evening, August 21, 2011 after repeated illness. She was in her 95th year.
Carmel was a member of St Timothy’s Catholic Church in Orangeville, including the church choir and the CWL. She was held in affectionate regard by members of the parish who visited her in hospital during her last illness and to whom she responded with love and affection and characteristic good humour.
The funeral Mass for Carmel Nolan will take place at St Timothy Catholic Church, 42 Dawson Road, Orangeville, Ontario on Wednesday morning. Family members will receive friends at the church from 10:30 until Mass begins at 11:00 o’clock. Entombment will follow the Mass at the mausoleum in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Woodbridge (7300 Highway 27, between Highways 7 and 407).
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Carmel’s favourite charity: Columban Fathers, PO Box 10, St Columban’s, Nebraska 68056, USA (email: mission@columban.org)
Carmel Curley was born in Dublin, Ireland on November 2, 1916. She married Robert Anthony Nolan on September 18, 1939. They had 11 children, the first of whom, Paul Francis, died in infancy (1940). Moving to Canada in 1957, the family settled in Alberta, first briefly in Irma and Wainwright, then Edmonton where both Carmel and Robert became civil servants. In their retirement years, Carmel and Robert lived for some years in Toronto. A few years after her husband’s death in 1988, Carmel moved to the Caledon area with family members, where she established a new community of friends.
Predeceased by her husband, Robert , their first-born son, Paul Francis and her granddaughter, Leilani (2007), Carmel is survived by her five daughters and their spouses: Pauline, Ita, Celine (Rick), Anne (Tim) and Patricia (Victor); by her five sons and their spouses: Fergal (Stella), Ciaran, Declan (Nancy), Robert and Cathal (Valerie)); and also by her grandchildren and their spouses: Adrienne, Aidan, Andrea, Andrew, Brendan (Grace), Genevieve, Joseph, Kirsten, Laura, Liam, Michael (Sarah), Ryan, Shauna (Michael) and Theresa; and finally by her great-grandchildren: Aaralyn and Michelle.
Carmel Nolan was a remarkable woman. She had a keen sense of compassion that extended beyond family to any person she encountered, irrespective of status, and in whom she sensed a private suffering and the need for a listening ear and a quiet, consoling word. She had a deep faith and an abiding trust in the goodness of God and relied on that to carry her , her family and others through many of life’s tribulations. Determined and steadfastly loyal, she was a persuasive advocate for her children’s interests and welfare; her gracious letters were family famous for their invariably positive results and written always in the most beautiful script the like of which is now rarely seen. Much beloved, she was, as Scripture says, “a woman of noble character, more precious than rubies.” May she rest in peace.
