Sharing my condolences with the Parnaby family on the loss of this storied and exceptional man. Mr. Parnaby was many things for Caledon; for me he was a consummate teacher on many matters related to good governance of CCS. He was a principled Board member, a trusted advisor, a fair critic, and always an eager participant if it meant value-add for Caledon. The community is better, in a multitude of ways, because of Hap and his zeal for give-and-take on civic matters. One of the very best of the very best that Caledon can claim as their own!
Jane Boyd
My deepest sympathy to the Parnaby family.
Tayler was a legend – what a voice! I always enjoyed listening to him on radio for many, many years.
May all the fond memories help console you all at this very difficult time.
Rest in peace Tayler❤❤❤

Dear Lynda and family: I am so very sorry for your loss. Having hired me to work at CKEY news in 1977, Hap became a mentor and a friend. His career in journalism, in radio news in particular, was long and impressive. Those who worked with him and for him got to experience first hand how a true professional gets the job done, setting an example with his clear, concise writing, live reporting, and anchoring. His enthusiasm for radio and reporting was infectious. He was a reporter’s reporter. A true ‘newsman’. I owe him an immense debt and will miss him. Jim Maclean

Lynda, Bill and Family.
My deepest condolences on the loss of your husband and Father. I first came to know Hap on CFRB , as I listened to the news on a daily basis. Then i had the honour of working with him on the Caledon Community Services board of Directors in 2009/2010. There I came to know again what a principled man of integrity Hap was.
In death our relationship is not ended – it is changed, not ended. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on him! May Tayler, and all the souls of the faithful, through the mercy of God, rest in Peace.
Bill Trbovich
I covered many a news conference and event with Hap over the years and found him to be solid, fair, honest, insightful, caring and possessing a great sense of humour. It was the discussions we would have prior, during and after an event that I will remember most. When he got that twinkle in his eye, you always knew he was on to something! Till we meet at that news conference in the sky, rest in peace my friend.

Sorry to hear about Hap. We, in the journalism business, always saw him as a reporter’s reporter. God Bless. Claire Hoy

Hap was my operator at CFOR. He was a 15 -year -old highschool student who crossed the street to the station to take control of my afternoon show every day. The irony was that the kid had a better radio voice than I did. Years later when I needed a job, I called Hap and he hooked me up with the CHUM news where he worked in the mid 1960s. I am so grateful to have known him. RIP.
Suzanne Burrows Swanson
May Hap’s name be for a blessing to all who knew and loved him. Mother, Kay Burrows, worked at CFOR beginning in 1956. There are fond memories of Hap and the love he had for the radio. Hockey games were such fun to listen to with the occasional, “Right you are, Ken.” (McDonald) thrown in. Sincere condolences to all his family. Suzanne Burrows Swanson

I worked with Hap for 13 years at CFRB, for the last 2, we shared the office at the Queen’s Park Bureau. His breadth of knowledge and experience was impressive. When not immersed in the news of the day, he often spoke of his wife, Lynda and their family, and his passion for model trains. He was a gifted story teller. My condolences to the Parnaby family.

Hap hired me for my first job in journalism at CKEY news. actually he allowed me to come in for free to be “taught the business” … then eventually I worked on staff for him at CKO. He once told me as a kid he always ran down the street after the firetrucks when he saw them, and this was his first tip off that he would become a journalist. He loved those fire stories all the time he was a journalist. He was a terrific reporter and I learned a lot from him. RIP Hap.

My deepest condolences to Lynda and the Parnaby family. Hap hired me fresh out of Radio and Television Arts to work as a network operator at NewsRadio in Ottawa. It was the summer of 1969. Hap and Paul Taylor had recently launched the service. I remember Hap’s hospitality upon my arrival, as he invited me and Phil Godin, two new employees, to his home where he and Lynda treated us to dinner. After that summer, I worked part-time at CKEY while a student at U. of T. We took in the daily “feeds” from Hap and Paul as they provided coverage of Parliament Hill. One late afternoon at NewsRadio, Hap was stumbling while recording a “voicer”. He got up and left the announce booth for a minute or so. When he returned, he quickly performed the 47 second “voicer” in a single take. If my memory serves me, he never looked again at his script. He simply spoke, flawlessly, into the microphone. What a master he was at his craft!
Carmen Woodburn
So sorry to hear about Hap’s passing. Always enjoyed talking with him when we lived in Palgrave and listening to his take on things. Wishing Lynda and the family peace and fond memories.

It was such an honour to be Hap’s friend for so many years. He was so proud of his family. Aside from news discussions, Hap was always praising his sons as they progressed through university and onto their careers. When the grandchildren started school Hap was praising their educational and sporting excellence. He was forever bragging about his daughters-in-law. When our talk adjourned for the day, Hap would say: “home to see my bride.” Lynda , you were loved and cherished every day. He never forgot the sacrifices you made as he sped off to the next big story..
I hope this note brings you some comfort through this heartbreaking time. I will miss him but with fond memories.

Lynda, Billy, Andy, Patrick and families all our love and prayers on your loss of such an amazing man.
It’s been a long time since the 70’s when we meet in Bolton. Drawn together by our boys, Baseball, hockey, school or Community events we were there together to build a better community for our families. So much fun even when it was sitting in a freezing arena at 5:30 am or the blazing sun for Baseball.
Hap was always the positive one, his smile was infectious and he got you to laugh and enjoy. Just his way.
Lynda, all those wonderful lunches we had when I was back for a visit.
If my memory serves me right Hap is a Newfoundlander like me.
Hap will rest now in peace and love.
He will be there with you all forever, for a chat whenever you need one.

I remember Hap zipping across West St. from ODCVI on some lunch hours to work at CFOR. He found his passion in radio as a teenager and was one of the lucky ones who never really worked a day in his life as his work was his passion. He deserved the many honours that were bestowed upon him. He’s one of the 1%. And such a wonderful person to boot. Orillia is very proud of him and his picture is on display as a member of the Orillia Hall of Fame.
Rest in peace Happy.

My first boss, mentor and lifelong friend, Tayler Parnaby was a vital ingredient in my life and career. Incredible experiences at every turn… I remember being on call at CKEY and being sent to a deadly rest home fire in Etobicoke… Parnaby lived nearby and got there before me. But the great Mississauga train derailment was probably the best example of all – he packed computer equipment into his station wagon and turned it into an on-site news terminal… and there he was when I arrived to start the coverage. You just had to feel it in your bones when he was involved. What an incredible loss – as a professional and a human being, His vision included diversity in the newsroom, decades before it became fashionable. Whenever I made my way to Toronto, I always tried to grab a beer with Parnaby. Always a lesson to be learned. My most sincere condolences to Lynda and the entire family.
Bernie Rochon

“Hap” was one of my instructors at Humber College. He was an absolutely fabulous teacher. Although I never worked for him, I would bump into him from time to time and we became good friends, he was always the perfect gentleman and would always offer really good advice. Hap was without question was the news man’s news man. He is among the last of the really good journalists.
Paul F. Taylor
My condolences to Lynda and family.
Hap and I were in on the ground floor when NewsRadio was created in late 1967. In those early days we joked that NewsRadio was the “biggest two station radio news network” in Canada. (CKEY & CFCF). We worked hard over the ensuing years to become the biggest and best 35 station network along with CBS Radio News. Hap’s willingness to innovate and do things differently made my life as his colleague a joy.
Lynda, you may not remember, but you asked me decades ago to deliver the eulogy at Hap’s funeral service. Sorry I can’t be there for you, but I will be thinking of you and Hap from my perch in New Brunswick.
Brian and Nancy Willer
Hap helped save the country.
I’ve known Hap dating back to my days at the Telegram when I worked as a staff reporter-photographer …but became a close friend after Nancy and I purchased our Caledon farm in 1973. Canada was teetering on a breakup in 1995 when Rene Lévesque forced a referendum on separation … and many Canadians were ambivalent. After a shoot in rural Quebec I told Hap I was shocked at the shift towards separatism outside the cites where all the polls had been taken. A small group was trying to organize a rally in Montreal with a cavalcade of buses, cars, and trucks starting in Toronto that might help convince Quebec to remain in Canada. For weeks Hap urged his huge audience to join the cavalcade and let Quebec know that we wanted them to vote NO. The cavalcade grew from a few dozen to hundreds of buses and cars with thousands of worried Canadians. Only by a whisker…a scary 50% to 49% was the breakup of Canada averted. I felt and I still feel that Hap’s newscasts made the difference as we came dangerously close to losing the country. Thanks my terrific ole pal…to Lynda, Billy, Andy, Paddy, Judy, Bob, Susie and John…we’re all feeling a little lonelier this week without him.

Bill and family,
I was so sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. I was so lucky to have gotten to spend time with Hap while he lead on the Board at CCS. What a wonderful and interesting man he was. I was always captivated when we spoke and he always impressed me with his knowledge and zest for getting the facts right. He was a true community builder and will be so missed by many. What a mark he made on this world. Sending deepest condolences to you all.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Hap. Hap gave me my first job in broadcasting in 1969 at News Radio in Ottawa as a network controller and then CKEY. I’ll never forget his advice when I told him I wanted to be a reporter. Hap said you need to tell a story (voicer) in 45 seconds or forget it.
I didn’t forget it and he taught me how to tell those stories.
So proud I knew and worked with this radio legend. Thoughts are with you Lynda.
