    Gary, Bruce, Brian, Jimmy and family;

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time. I will always remember the good times that I had with your dad when I was a little girl…like the time he had a piece of apple pie for breakfast while my family and I visited you all during an Easter weekend. Boy was I surprised! My mother would never let us do that back home but at your house we were spoiled and the rules didn’t apply. Rest in peace mon oncle.

Your cousin Karen (McIntyre) Renaud, husband Tom Renaud, and family.

    January 22, 2012 at 1:41 pm

Thank you, St. Hilaire family, for allowing us to reflect upon the warmth and joy Roger had given us and my Mom, Charlotte Garfield, for the past decade. We all knew he was ill, but that certainly does not diminish the sadness we feel upon his passing. Our hearts go out to the family and especially his boys, whom he loved dearly.

Whenever I went to visit my Mom, I was guaranteed a quiet smile and an immediate welcome by Roger. He used to come and get me at the airport and then, as if royally decreed, we’d all go out to eat at their favorite place, Mama Mia’s. It was a popular restaurant for most people in Hollywood, but for Roger and Charlotte, it was their home-away-from-home. Waiters, waitresses, the bar staff, even the valets would stop and come out and greet them. I even met a cook once. Talk about being at home. No wonder he loved South Florida so much; kinda like Cheers but for the retired.

I always enjoyed how he sized up a problem or a world issue (we talked about politics frequently). With a careful, reasoned argument, he would suggest certain solutions to the complexity of the world. And you know, coming from his mouth, with his demeanor, it somehow seemed possible.

I always thought the phase ‘Still waters run deep’ was appropriate to Roger. Those who had the inclination to talk with him always came away refreshed and enlivened. Even when he would regale us with those marvelous old jokes. Funny thing is that he knew they were a bit corny from the start; but he loved them and retelling them nonetheless.

Whether he was in his Arnold Palmer sweater or in a tux on a cruise, he was always the perfect gentleman with a sincere smile. He truly loved people, his friends and strangers soon to become his friend.

Phyllis, my Mom and I will truly miss Roger, not only because of the way he made us feel, but because of the effect he had in making us appreciate all people around us.

Here are some pictures from December 2009 showing Roger as a host, a golfer, a reader, a sleeper, a helper, a dancer and an eater. Probably more roles as well: http://www.thegarfields.com/garfieldfamily/omidecember09/index.html . Then of course, here is a cruise from Spring 2010: http://www.thegarfields.com/garfieldfamily/spring2010/spring2010.html#omipassover . And here he is in a tux on a cruise again: http://www.thegarfields.com/garfieldfamily/omicruisedec2008/index.html .

We all feel truly blessed to have spent our time with Roger.

  13. dorothy mcintyre (Mockler), your aunt Dot

    January 22, 2012 at 2:24 pm

So sad to hear of your father’s passing. My deepest sympathy and condolences to all the family.
I’ll always remember your father being by my side in my difficult times with his hammer and nails, (he and uncle Emile who sadly passed away last year), I’ll cherish those memories forever! In time of need, he was always there.
My thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time. It’s not easy losing a parent, but try and find some comfort in knowing that he lived his life the way he wanted and that he’s not suffering anymore. He was a good man and I’ll always remember him. With all my love, aunt Dot.

I send my heartfelt sympathies out to you, my cousins. Uncle Roger was a such an important figure in my younger life while growing up. Roger was talented in so many ways and I always admired him for his great qualities and warmth. I felt he could do anything and he always seemed to do it with grace and humour. When I was lucky enough to be around him when he worked, he always had the sensitiviy to make me feel part of what he was doing and he meant it sincerely. He encouraged me when I was a student and was instrumental in getting me a few important summer jobs when I needed the money. I think of him often and I will cherish the memories.

    To the St. Hilaire Family:

Just yesterday I learned of the passing of our friend, Roger St. Hiilaire. I have many memories of Roger as we not only worked closely in business but also he was a personal friend. My son Wade and I had the pleasure of traveling and skiing through the French, Italian and Swiss Alps with Roger. What a wonderful time and Roger made us laugh and brought happiness the entire journey. A wonderful memory.
    Thanks Roger.

He taught me a few lessons without saying a word, when it was important and needed. That summer on the farm with my cousins , aunt and Ucle Roger were indeed life changing for me, and never forgotten.
