With sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, John D. Howard, who left us peacefully surrounded by family, in his 89th year, on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston. John was a devoted husband for 64 years to his late wife, Gwenyth Howard (January 2022). He was a loving father to Lori Howard (Owen), Lynn Howard (Emlyn), Chris Howard (Alison), and Suzanne Turcotte.
His legacy lives on in his beloved grandchildren: Emma (Nathan), Kate (Justin), Chalmers (Nicola), Ginny (Adam), Samantha, Amy, and John, as well as his great-grandson August. He was also a dearly loved brother to the late Janette (Howard) Burigana (Carl), and brother-in-law and friend to Doug (Jan) and Pat (Ab). A life-long friend of Sally & Gord. Fondly remembered by his dear friend Joan. Cherished in the hearts of all his family, friends from the Westway Bridge Club family, friends from Kincardine and close friend and business partner Lloyd (Susan).
John’s generous spirit and warm heart touched everyone he knew. He was always the first to offer help, and his sense of humor and active social life remained strong until the very end. His commitment to his family, his community, and his friends will never be forgotten.
We lost Dad to complications from a stroke Thursday afternoon. We take comfort in knowing that John lived a full, active, and meaningful life, and that his legacy continues in all of us. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Matthews House Hospice (matthews.house) in Alliston in John’s name. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring.

John and Gwen were both larger-than-life figures to me growing up as a “kid” in the Westway Bridge club. Humour, personality, mischievousness, generosity, hospitality, intelligence…. all these great qualities and more add up to two people who loved life, and engaged it fully. I look up to both, having great respect for their individual selves, and the team they were together. Both were good friends to my parents Bob and Doris. Thank you, John, for so many good memories. To all the family, I send my deep condolences in this time of loss. Peace.

My deepest condolences to the family. John was such a lovely man. I live in the houses by the retirement home and saw your dad almost everyday on his daily walks. Was a pleasure to meet him. Always had a smile on his face 🙂
May he rest in peace!
