August 29, 1934 – October 26, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Father, Gido, Michael Bewcyk, at the age of 92. He was a remarkable man with a strong will and a boundless determination to keep living his life to the fullest, even in the face of difficult challenges. We are grateful for the life he lived and the optimism and resilience he modelled for us each and every day.
Michael was born in Port Arthur, Ontario and grew up in Geraldton, a remote Northern Ontario mining town where he met and eventually married his high school sweetheart, the love of his life and wife of 63 years, Marion Stelmachuk who predeceased him on December 11, 2015. Together they raised 3 children, Stephen (Victoria), Brian (Helen) and Katherine. He was grandfather to Jennifer, Lisa, Julie, Melanie, David and Daniel and great grandfather to Zoey, Sawyer, Ethan, Marcus, Adam, Justin, Sebastian, Michael, Ella and Bowie. He took great joy and happiness in watching them grow and sharing in their milestones and accomplishments.
Michael started his career working on the railroad in Stratford where he was recognized as Apprentice of the Year in 1957. He committed himself to the railroad for 8 years before being accepted into Teacher’s College. He dedicated himself to a teaching career for 30 years, starting as a machine shop and drafting teacher at Burnamthorpe Collegiate in Etobicoke where he eventually rose through the ranks, retiring in 1991 as a Technical Director. He also provided board leadership becoming a Night School Principal of one of the largest Continuing Education programs in the City of Toronto. Perhaps the academic achievement of which he was most proud was earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilfrid Laurier University in 1984.
After a blessed and healthy life, he was diagnosed with colon cancer in the fall of 2019. In the years that followed, he faced his battle with cancer with the same determination, resolve and ever positive attitude that had carried him through so much of his life. While saying goodbye is incredibly difficult, we are grateful for the years we had with him and the memories that will always remain with us. He was our Dad, Gido, and his place in our hearts is eternal. He will always be remembered with love, missed beyond words, and never forgotten.
The family will receive friends at Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street South (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) on Monday, November 2, 2026 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will take place in Christ Church Anglican, 22 Nancy Street, Bolton on Tuesday, November 3 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bolton.
