Fred Kolb

September 22, 2024 By Egan Funeral Home 174 Condolences

Kolb Picture

After an enjoyable day of volunteering and visiting with family and friends at the Bolton Fall Fair (one of his favourite things), Fred passed away suddenly but peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, September 22, 2024.   Loving husband of Pat  for over 62 years, cherished father of David, Donna (deceased) (Nick) and Dan (Laurie), adored grandfather of Kori (Jason), Casie (Tom), Caitlyn (Ryan), Matthew, Victoria and Joseph and proud great grandfather of Oakley, Bowen and Kent who will all miss his “Grandpa road trips”.   Dear brother of Josephine (Albert), Katherine (Ken deceased) and Emil (Beryle). Cherished by many brothers and sisters-in-law.  Loved “Uncle Fred” to his nieces and nephews.

Fred was a devoted family man and community member who always had time for his friends and community.  He was an active volunteer with Caledon Meals on Wheels and Albion-Bolton Agricultural Society for over 40 years.  As a lifelong farmer, Fred was also involved with Peel Soil and Crop, Peel Milk Committee and Peel Federation of Agriculture.

Fred continued to be vibrant and active up until his passing.  He loved any project (safe or unsafe?) or problem to solve  (there was nothing he couldn’t fix), his chickens, playing cards, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, the Blue Jays and any kind of pie or dessert.  But most of all, he loved telling a good story and the company of others. Fred lived in the area for over 85 years and was a pillar of the community, always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need.

Fred will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The family will receive their friends at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street South (Hwy 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) on Thursday afternoon 2 – 4 and evening 6 – 8 o’clock.

Funeral Mass will be held in Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, 60 Allan Drive, Bolton on Friday morning, September 27 at 11 o’clock.

Interment Morningside Cemetery, Palgrave.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to Caledon Meals on Wheels 10 McEwan Drive, Unit 1, Bolton L7E 1H1 or the charity of your choice.

Condolences for the family may be offered at www.EganFuneralHome.com

Dear Pat, David, Danny, Nick and all of the family. . .

Geoff and I were shocked to see this news, having just spent the afternoon with Fred and Pat at the Fleetwood celebration. When we think of Fred we think of a wonderful man who represents all of the important things; family, community, kindness and a steadfastness that is hard to find these days. The kind of person that is a great example to all by simply being themselves and we are all the better for having known him. Unfortunately we are out of the country travelling and won’t be back in time for the funeral. Please know that we are thinking of you all during this difficult time.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Fred and Pat at the Bolton Fair’s rodeo Friday evening. Fred saw me looking for an empty seat and he slid over and motioned for me to sit down. We sat together for about an hour. We talked just a little about politics, but mostly we marvelled at the skills of cowboys and cowgirls performing in front of us.

I immediately liked Fred and I feel so grateful to have had that little bit of time with him.

My heartfelt condolences to Pat and the entire family.

We are all saddened to hear of the passing of Fred. He was a dear friend to all our family for many years. He was always eager to hear about all of the things happening in our household. Mary taught swimming lessons with Freida Pinkett in the family pool and Fred was always there to make repairs whenever something needed fixing in the pool. He took a great interest in what was happening with our sons Brian and Ken especially as they began their work careers in the field of education and with Agriculture Canada. Fondest memories will be of sharing our Boxing Day mornings at the Kolb household. It was always fun to watch Fred and his tractor blow the snow out of our driveway when we were away in Florida for the winter. Fred was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed by us and the whole Caledon community. Our most sincere condolences go out to Pat, David, Danny and the whole extended Kolb family.

To Pat, Dave and the entire Kolb Clan,

Sad to hear about Fred’s passing but after talking with you, Dave, I was happy to hear you had the previous week with your Parents and Fred had a great day at the Bolton Fall Fair. You couldn’t write a better script. Fred and Pat were always good to me from the time I showed up in Cedar Mills all those years ago. Always had a smile, time to chat, time teach a young fella about farming and hear what you were up to. I’ll always remember the laughs we had after bumping into each other in Maui. One of the good ones. RIP Fred.

It is with heavy heart, that I write about fond memories. Like the time Lynda and I sat on Freddie’s lap to ask it Donna could play hockey and the many nights at the ball park or hockey arena. Or when I hollered up to his bedroom window to ask if he would adopt me. Trading turnips for liver, yes liver. But most of all, his big warm hugs. Our heartfelt condolences to Pat and the entire family.

    Pat and family :

I realized today that we have known Fred for more than 45 years. We met Fred when we were teenagers through his daughter Donna, and have stayed in touch for all those years since.

His hugs were legendary and his stories were engaging; occasionally it took some time for Fred to get to the point, but it was always worth the wait.

There is no surprise in the wonderful words being shared here about Fred. We are all better for having had Fred in our lives but with that fondness comes a greater feeling of loss.

I hope that Fred is reunited with Donna, watching over their family, enjoying a beautiful sunset together. He will be missed.

Mr. Kolb played a large roll in my early years, visiting the farm and attending swimming lessons. He had a way of welcoming that just made you feel at ease. Maybe it was the way he addressed you by name with the deep tone in the his voice, that made me feel that this is a man who brings peace. He was always happy to show us around the farm, showing how the cows got milked and introducing all the cats and dogs along the way. He will be dearly remembered for the man he was.

I first met Fred and Pat about 40 years ago when I was teaching first aid at the old Bolton Ambulance hall and we have been good friends since. I thought to myself what a lovely caring couple. They have done so much for Bolton and for farming. They both volunteered for so many things and even their son Dan continued the tradition in joining Bolton volunteer Ambulance with me. Pat recently was awarded Volunteer of the Year for Caledon. You couldn’t meet a nicer man than Fred who loved meeting people. He was soft spoken, wise and humble and always a straight shooter. People were shocked and saddened at the Bolton Fair on Sunday when news spread that Fred had passed away after spending time there the day before. My heartfelt condolences to Pat, Dan and the rest of the wonderful Kolb family.

We will miss his regular visits at the cottage, strolling across the driveway or through the bush to check on us, bring us potatoes and garlic, inspecting the latest project Rick is working on. Even the grandkids knew him so well, they would great him with a “Hi Fred”. Maureen Drive will never feel the same without him. Cherish your memories.

Pat, you and Fred have contributed greatly to the Caledon community with Meals on Wheels, which you both never sought recognition for, but deserved all that came your way.

Fred’s contributions to the Agricultural community are well known and he was always an advocate for Agriculture. The Bolton Agricultural Fall Fair has lost an amazing supporter and he will be missed.

Fifty years ago, Fred was President of the Albion & Bolton Agricultural Society, the group that makes Bolton Fall Fair happen each year. Fred was so proud of his large model combine, and we were asked to take especially good care of it. He was there still helping take in flower entries and talking to many people. It was truly a shock to hear the sad news on Sunday morning.

Our sincere sympathy to Pat and family on the passing of Fred. Always a supporter of our Caledon East girls ball team, Fred vowed he’d buy us jackets….all we had to do was win that last game. He bought the set of team jackets.
After some convincing from Laura Burrell and me to let Donna play hockey, he became a supportive Caledon Queens hockey dad for years. Dear Pat, David, Danny & Laurie:
I was shocked to hear that Fred had died suddenly. I thought he would always be here. And now there is this hole – in the family and in our hearts. Fred was a huge personality and when he married my sister, Pat, he fit like a glove. And was always there for all of us Doyle’s as we grew up. So I have known Fred for a very long time. He and Pat visited my late husband, Manfred and me wherever we were. They brought their children and grandchildren out to visit and our families got closer and closer.
Our son, Andrew and wife, Sara, also love him and Andrew was very happy that he brought his son, Sheamus, for a visit last summer.
One memorable story about Fred. He, Pat, Manfred and I joined an O’Hagan family trip to Ireland about 14 years ago. You all know how Fred loved to go for rides out in the country. We had a car rental, I had a map and Fred decided to try this new technology GPS, from Google to get to Kildare. So we went on all these back roads while I was using my map, Fred was driving and was following the GPS until we reached a canal. Dead end. Car can’t swim. Poor Fred was deflated but we still made it to Kildare.

Dear “Grandma Pat”, David, Dan, Laurie, Nick, Kori, Casie and the rest of the Kolb family. Like many others, I knew of the Kolbs, a dedicated family serving the community, and owners of the pool where I took swimming lessons as a child. It wasn’t until years later that I would have the privilege and blessing to be able to call them friends and later family when I started caring for “the girls”.

The Kolbs were so welcoming and kind, but as many know, you would expect nothing less. Over the years as life got busy, I saw them less, I went off to school, found “a fella” (as Fred would call him), and started a family of my own, but they were still around and would always make time. Funny how one thinks there is always more time later. Fred had a fun sense of humour. One of my fondest memories is when we had announced our 4th pregnancy, Fred looked at me with a smirk and said “ If you come by the farm, I’ll explain why this keeps happening!”

It has been a blessing to have them share in pivotal moments in mine and my family’s life, the many sacraments, the many joyful times and even the hard and the sad. I will miss his hugs and I know my kids will miss yelling out how they spotted “Grandma Pat & Grandpa Fred” at church.

in Bolton in the mid 1980’s until 1995. Of course he remembers Fred and family
with great fondness and recognizes the generosity and kindness of Fred and families.
He knows the Kolb families very well and he said he will offer prayers for Fred and the family.

Submitted by Wayne McCulloch- a friend of Fr Leslie and the Kolb families.

It was such a shock to learn of Fred’s unexpected passing. I can’t believe I had a nice chat with him just a few weeks ago and I thought how well he looked but……we never know what tomorrow brings. How great he attended the Bolton Fair where he would have seen many of his friends. Sincerest condolences to the whole Kolb family. Such a loss to the community

So sorry to hear the news of Fred’s passing. Heavy hearts for sure. Fred will be missed by many. He always took time to say hello with a big mischevious smile, and was genuinely interested in what you had to say. A pillar of the community. A life to be proud of. May he rest in peace.

I have very fond memories of Uncle Fred beginning when I was a child in the 70s. Pat and Fred have offered hospitality on numerous occasions through the decades and he has welcomed us to experience the farm on every stay, including most recently his chickens. They visited my family in multiple locations in northern and western Canada, demonstrating a priority for extended family. I consider him a role model in so many ways – as a family man, a prominent food producer in Canada’s largest urban area, a business man that has facilitated prosperity for his family and community. As the photo depicts he will also be in my 10 year old son’s memories as Uncle Fred the farmer. Andrew, Sara and Sheamus Pape-Salmon. Saanich, BC.

Such a shock to learn of Fred’s passing. He helped me Friday morning at the Bolton Fair as I was bringing in a lot of flowers and could not get my car very close. He removed the barrier so that I could get closer. Then he helped me bring in some of the flowers. He told me to stay at the flower show and get organized there and he brought all the rest of my flowers in. Lastly he then offered to move my car back if I wanted. I gave him my car keys and he moved my car back! He looked in perfect health. A true gentleman. You can tell from the number of people commenting, that he touched a lot of the community.

Our deepest condolences to the Kolb and DeBoer families. Fred’s commitment to the community solidified the Kolb’s as one of the Clans of Albion. Our kids learned to swim in the Kolb’s pool. We have enjoyed your fellowship and neighbourliness over the decades. It truly sounds like Fred died doing what he loved, a beautiful day at the fair. I can’t think of a nicer way for a farmer to make his exit. Bless you all.

    To Pat and Family,

My sincere condolences on the recent passing of your husband Fred. I’m just hearing about this sad news now. My heart goes out to all your family and warm hugs surround your family during this sad time. Fred was larger than life in the farming community. I remember him when I was a kid and being introduced to him by my Dad, Edward O’Donnell. I’m so sorry to hear this. Hugs to all of you.
