Suddenly, with his loving wife of 60 years, Lynda by his side, on Monday, February 24, 2025, Hap Parnaby, in his 84th year. Proud and loving father of Bill (Tina), Andy (Jill), and Patrick (Denise). Cherished grandfather of Joseph, Mia, Isaac, Sadie, Alexandra, and Gabriella. Dear brother of Judy (Scott), and Bob (Maria). Fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews.

The family will receive their friends at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen St. S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) on Saturday, March 1st from 10 o’clock until one o’clock, followed by a graveside service at Glendale Memorial Gardens, 1810 Albion Road, Etobicoke at 2 o’clock.

My deepest condolences to Lynda and the Parnaby family. Hap hired me fresh out of Radio and Television Arts to work as a network operator at NewsRadio in Ottawa. It was the summer of 1969. Hap and Paul Taylor had recently launched the service. I remember Hap’s hospitality upon my arrival, as he invited me and Phil Godin, two new employees, to his home where he and Lynda treated us to dinner. After that summer, I worked part-time at CKEY while a student at U. of T. We took in the daily “feeds” from Hap and Paul as they provided coverage of Parliament Hill. One late afternoon at NewsRadio, Hap was stumbling while recording a “voicer”. He got up and left the announce booth for a minute or so. When he returned, he quickly performed the 47 second “voicer” in a single take. If my memory serves me, he never looked again at his script. He simply spoke, flawlessly, into the microphone. What a master he was at his craft!

It was such an honour to be Hap’s friend for so many years. He was so proud of his family. Aside from news discussions, Hap was always praising his sons as they progressed through university and onto their careers. My first boss, mentor and lifelong friend, Tayler Parnaby was a vital ingredient in my life and career. Incredible experiences at every turn… I remember being on call at CKEY and being sent to a deadly rest home fire in Etobicoke… Parnaby lived nearby and got there before me. But the great Mississauga train derailment was probably the best example of all – he packed computer equipment into his station wagon and turned it into an on-site news terminal… and there he was when I arrived to start the coverage. You just had to feel it in your bones when he was involved. Hap and I were in on the ground floor when NewsRadio was created in late 1967. In those early days we joked that NewsRadio was the “biggest two station radio news network” in Canada. (CKEY & CFCF). Hap’s willingness to innovate and do things differently made my life as his colleague a joy.

Hap helped save the country.
I’ve known Hap dating back to my days at the Telegram when I worked as a staff reporter-photographer …but became a close friend after Nancy and I purchased our Caledon farm in 1973. Canada was teetering on a breakup in 1995 when Rene Lévesque forced a referendum on separation … and many Canadians were ambivalent. After a shoot in rural Quebec I told Hap I was shocked at the shift towards separatism outside the cites where all the polls had been taken. A small group was trying to organize a rally in Montreal with a cavalcade of buses, cars, and trucks starting in Toronto that might help convince Quebec to remain in Canada. For weeks Hap urged his huge audience to join the cavalcade and let Quebec know that we wanted them to vote NO. The cavalcade grew from a few dozen to hundreds of buses and cars with thousands of worried Canadians. Only by a whisker…a scary 50% to 49% was the breakup of Canada averted. I felt and I still feel that Hap’s newscasts made the difference as we came dangerously close to losing the country. Thanks my terrific ole pal…to Lynda, Billy, Andy, Paddy, Judy, Bob, Susie and John…we’re all feeling a little lonelier this week without him.

I recall the day Hap was inducted to the Caledon Walk of Fame. It was his day to be honoured, but he gleefully walked the path, sharing stories of previous inductees. Always a great storyteller. Hap and his tattered little datebook will forever be remembered as one of the greats.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Hap. Hap gave me my first job in broadcasting in 1969 at News Radio in Ottawa as a network controller and then CKEY. I’ll never forget his advice when I told him I wanted to be a reporter. Hap said you need to tell a story (voicer) in 45 seconds or forget it.
I didn’t forget it and he taught me how to tell those stories.
