Bernard G. Black

September 8, 2009 By Leave A Condolence

In Memorial

(1922 – 2009)

“Bernie Black” well known and respected Toronto musician for over 60 years, passed away peacefully, at Southlake Regional Health Centre, Newmarket, on Monday, September 7, 2009.  He was in his 87th year.  He is survived by his adored wife Anne of 67 years, his children Jerry, Bernadette, Bob and their spouses Renee, Don and Maribeth,  his sisters Audrey McGregor, Mary McGourty, Dolly Brown and Helen O’Reilly.  He was “Pa” to his beloved grandchildren, Cheryl, Jason, Johanna, Jennifer, Janis and Matthew and his great grandchildren Sam, Evan, Gavin, Ella, Sophie and Madeleine.  Bernie possessed a seemingly endless repertoire as a pianist.  His ability to recall obscure song titles or settle other musical questions was renowned throughout the industry.  He entertained in the form of comedy, sing-a-longs, show tunes and jazz.  His career as a solo performer spotlighted his gift to ‘read a room’ and provide his fans with an amazing performance rarely seen in today’s clubs.  Jazz trios, quartets, soloist, coast to coast radio, CBC performances, numerous television appearances, featured artist at Massey Hall, this consummate entertainer never stopped honing his craft.  He continued to share his talent as the organist at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Wildfield.  The family will receive their friends at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) Friday afternoon 2-4 and evening 7-9 o’clock.  Memorial Mass will be held in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, 11873 The Gore Road, Brampton (Wildfield) Saturday morning, September 12 at 10 o’clock.  Parish prayers will be  Friday evening at 7 o’clock.   If desired, memorial donations may be made to Variety – The Children’s Charity, 3701 Danforth Avenue, Scarborough  M1N 2G2 (info@varietyontario.ca).  Condolences for the family may be offered at www.eganfuneralhome.com    Bernie gave us his ‘gift of music’, but he considered his most precious gift to be the love of his family.  We have been blessed to have Bernie touch our lives in one way or another.  He will be truly missed  ….. but I know we’ll meet again some sunny day!
