Beloved husband and best friend of Lynn (nee Flockhart) for 45 years. Loving father of Sean (Andi) and Lara (Mark). Cherished Papa of Grayson, Liam and Mason. He will be held dear in the hearts of his brother, Clete (Bev) and his sister, Nancy (Bill). William will be forever loved by his extended friends and family. Born and raised in Timmins, Ontario, Bill was a former partner at PWC. An avid cyclist, golfer and skier, he had many friends from Alpine Ski Club where he spent many winters with Lynn and the kids.

The family will receive their friends at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) Friday afternoon 2 – 4 and evening 6 – 8 o’clock. Funeral service will be held in the Egan chapel on Saturday morning, July 8 at 10 o’clock. Private family interment, Morningside Cemetery, Palgrave.

The Cotnam family has been so kind to invite all funeral guests to join them for a reception at the Royal Ambassador, 15430 Innis Lake Road, Caledon East. Directions for the reception will be provided at the funeral home.

Our family has a big hole in it with the passing of my loved brother-in-law, Bi ll. We shared such great memories of family gatherings, euchre and so many laughs. He was always available to help you with any problems, took care of our tax returns and showed his caring and compassion in so many ways. My sister, Lynn, was his “Princess” and he was her “Herc” – rest in peace – until we meet again.

Gone too soon but long remembered. My connection was as a ski buddy at Alpine and a partner at C&L. Connections with Bill always left me with a smile and a warm sense. Few can consistently engender that. If that is my take-away, I can only imagine both the wealth of memories and depth of loss felt by those much closer than I. Rest well Bill.

Dear Lynn, Sean, and Lara we are still in shock and disbelief. We have difficulty imagining your world without Bill but know you will gain strength from the love and support of close family and your tremendous network of caring friends. As Sean’s Mother-in-Law I have seen the great love and respect he has for his Dad. I admire Bill & Lynn for their teamwork and wonderful family values they instilled in Sean and Lara. They were such a great team working, always together, to raise their children in a loving, respectful, and fun environment. Now, through Sean, I am so grateful that Bill’s legacy of family values, work hard, play hard, unconditional love, and teamwork live on in Sean – our daughter Andrea and our beautiful grandsons Grayson and Liam are the beneficiaries if that great legacy. THANK YOU for all that Bill (and Lynn).

Bill, you will be sorely missed but always in our hearts.

It is incredibly devastating to hear of the loss of someone whose heart was so full of love, compassion, guidance and the desire to always make things right both professionally and personally. He gave so much of himself and was so generous with him time with us.

When I was young in the business world he always treated me with respect and took the time to explain things to me with great kindness.

We called him the Bill Pill, because he always made us feel better about our progress and our business. We had the luxury of spending a week with him and Lynn in Brazil where he shared his charismatic, fun-loving and social spirit with us.

Bill and Lynn came to all of our Christmas parties and we were deeply honoured to be included in Lara’s wedding.

Bill was a truly good and ethical man and made our lives better by being in it. We never expected to loose him so soon and it is truly shattering. He will be remembered and missed forever.

Our sincere condolences to Lynn and the family for this deep and immeasurable loss.

    July 6, 2017 at 2:35 pm

Linda and I were very shocked and saddened to hear of Bill’s passing. He was an all round great guy.
It is hard to believe that Bill and I started working together at McDonald Currie (Coopers) 51 years ago this month. There are many great memories of those early days – his party house on Cassandra, the long liquid lunches at the Pretzel Bell and a road trip to California.
I visited Bill in London (he already knew all the great pubs) and we drove his new sports car to Paris where Bill kept driving circles around the Arc de Triomphe. A week later Lynn replaced me in the passenger seat and they drove together through 45 wonderful and happy years.
Then we were ushers at each other’s wedding. Then the monthly poker games.
So many warm, happy memories flood through at such a sad time.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Lynn, Sean, Lara, Popa’s grandchildren and families.

What sad and shocking news to hear of Bill’s passing. We extend our love and support to the Cotnam Family. What a blessing to have shared so many happy times with a very special Alpine friend. He was such a wonderful, kind and generous man who was always there for others. Bill’s friendship and camaraderie will be truly missed by the Irwin family.

We will look to ride Bill’s dedicated chair #1 when we are in the Steeps at Alpine. We will listen for his presence in the solitude of the ride. He will be there in spirit and we will share many great memoires.

    To the Cotnam family

I was breathless and saddened when I heard the terrible news of Bill’s passing.

Bill was a true gentleman and a friend to all.
I remember 22 years ago when Bill hired me to be the local IT support for the C&L Mississauga office.
He always had a smile on his face every time I saw him. I admired his active life style and he was a true role model to many.

    Please accept my heartfelt condolences

    Dear Lynn, Sean, and Lara,

I’m so saddened to hear of your family’s loss with Bill’s passing. I will always remember him in the brightest of lights, from those many Alpine time trial mornings on December 31st, when he would wake us with “Freedom”, blasting on the chalet stereo to put Sean, Lara, Jenn and myself into race-ready excitement, to the many chalet shared lunches, arm wrestles, and school carpools… Bill, always with a loving smile and kind encouraging words.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this difficult time, as I regretfully am unable to attend the upcoming service. Much love from the west coast…

    Dearest Billie,
This is an unconventional condolence message but I need to let everyone know what you meant to me and this is the only way I know how.
This note has come too soon….
It is hard to sum up the impact you have had on my life since the moment I walked through your door at cedar haven with sean holding my hand. Both you and Lynn welcomed me into your home and your hearts from day one. I want to thank you both for the wonderful man you raised, Sean continues to amaze me everyday with his strength and gentle manner. His is a ‘true man’ and has truly learned from the best.
Not only have you have a tremendous impact on me but also our little Liam and Grayson. Those boys adore you and will miss their papa dearly. They have a special bond with you and I know you will watch over them; this gives me comfort.

I miss your jokes and laughter already and I will keep you close to my heart. I love you.

    Love,
    Your daughter in law

What can I possibly write about Uncle Bill that hasn’t already been mentioned? These accolades bode and reference well his fine character and intellect, his caring nature, his jovial, always welcoming demeanor, his generosity, humanity, patience, charismatic charm, wit, and selfless devotion. As the saying goes, they “broke the mold” when they made Bill. He was one of a kind, unique and special; a man who lived his life according to values held close to his heart with great love for his fellow man. Bill’s legacy, actions and deeds will long be recognized and acknowledged, Bill himself, forever cherished. He was pretty wonderful, so dependable, so goodnatured, always willing to lend a hand, advice or expertise when needed. Much loved and respected by our entire family, he will be sorely missed. They just don’t make them like that anymore and we can only be thankful that we were privileged to have simply known and had in our lives, such an honourable man and loving role model, a testament to a life well lived. We will continue to carry him with us, in our hearts; his spirit, his example, his values will not be forgotten. Rest well Uncle Bill, and know how much your influence and good intentions have touched us all and made a positive impact upon our lives.

We were privileged to have Bill Cotnam as our brother-in-law for 45 years. The tributes written above exemplify exactly the Bill we knew. As a role model he was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, son-in-law, brother-in-law and friend. He excelled in each and every one of these roles and never missed the opportunity to teach us to be kind to each other.
What will we do without our “Uncle Bill”? He is irreplaceable. He was a caring and loving individual who was never too busy to lend a hand or an ear.
Lynn we love you and will always be here for you.

Our sincerest condolences to all of the Cotnam’s. He will definitely live on in all of your memories.
I recall Bill in the same manner as all of his colleagues and partners (he was the first manager I worked for at C&L when I joined back in 1976, and on my first day he sent me straight “home” to Niagara to work at a client for 4 months). He was a great friend and mentor. I also have very fond memories of our times together as partners in C&L/PwC. He was also so happy and eager to have fun. He never got old. He was an original.

Rest well Bill. We miss you. See you on the other side.
