Thinking of the Campbell family with fond memories this morning as I read the Toronto Star’s announcements.
A visit by Bill and Mona was always a guarantee for hilarity and laughter when we were youngsters!

    Dear Bill,
You would have laughed – Joan and I were out walking. She went into a store to buy a few things and noticed a rack of greeting cards. She thought she would pick a condolence card to send but there were only cards for other occasions. Watching through the window, I noticed her smile when she looked at one of the cards. When she came out I asked what was so funny. She said that there was only one card remotely suitable for you. It was a going away card headlined, Good luck and Goodbye. We both laughed out loud and agreed you would have shared our laughter.
It was like so many other fond memories we have of you and your wonderful ability to make us smile. Remember how you would turn your glasses upside down then pull out your dentures and launch into some goofy charade. Or when we were young teens, you were often there to play board games with us. We thought it was simply because you liked to play, but really it was to add a little frivolity to the game and keep us from getting into heated teenage disputes. Thanks, Bill. Playing those games with you really helped build my self esteem at a critical time of my life. Now that I have children of my own, I understand why you never seemed to win.
How about the time you and Mona threw a party and got us all to wear frog hats as we sat around your table with frog napkins? Soon with the help of a little scotch, we were all croaking with the good nature that only very good friends can share. We’ll never forget that night.
You may be gone Bill, but you left us with many warm memories. We are going to hold them dear. Joan will remember the hours she spent with you and your handyman skills. You earned her undying appreciation and respect during that summer as you laboured together to build a deluxe swing set for our children . And Bill, Ben still has the shoe shine box you made him. It was an important component of his first job as shoeshine boy at Joe’s barber shop and it taught him the value of a dollar.
Most importantly for me Bill is that you were a great role model. You taught me to enjoy my wit. Yours was second to none. You taught me to have fun with my own children through play and laughter. You taught me that your home is your castle and you better learn to be a handyman. Most importantly, you were a good person and you made me want to be one too. Thanks Bill and Good Luck and Good Bye.

    Jerry and Joan
