Aunt Mildred, what a lady…..always kind, independent and a tad stubborn at times. She loved her Church Family, and sure was a real gem. I am very proud and honoured to have know her most of my life.

God Bless you Mildred, you are now with Uncle Jack and Toby!!!!!!!

A great lady who faced the ups and downs of life with wit and grit has left us. Seldom have I met someone so incapable of self-pity. I admire her love for family, her home, her bridge club, her values, and her church. She had this gentle but wry cynicism against modernity and its pretensions. Thanks for loving on her so well these last decades. I will be in Nairobi from the 10th until the 26th so will sadly miss honoring her in person. Please know that I will be remembering her and the whole family as they gather.
    with love and prayers,
    Mark Shaw

I hope I am not to late and I wish that I had spent more time organizing my thoughts but this is aunt Mildred to me.

I always loved aunt Mildred and uncle jack despite how much to this day I am not a tomato juice fan. I didn’t know know them but I connected with something about them, even when I was little.

Looking back and re meeting Aunt Mildred as an adult it makes sense. She was hilarious and sassy and just who she was. Her sister was a saint and raised my mother also a saint so it was so wonderfully refreshing to meet someone who was witty and a little cutting and maybe knew sometime we just could NOT be “loving and kind”

There is a lot of pure love and holiness running through our family. We are respectful and kind to each other. We look for the best and forgive the worst, I am so proud to be from this Mary Douglas style group, but the truth is sometimes I just want to be snarky and break the rules and call it like I see it and be funny. I always wondered why the “loving and kind” gene skipped me, but it didn’t, I got the loving(but really…? And kind (but come on…?.) from an equally wonderful kindhearted generous Summerville but sprinkled with a little Mildred “sass”.

As I get to know my cousins more and more I see so many treasured characteristics of grandma but these kids also have some Aunt Mildred in all of them because they bring the fun, make fun of everyone, are sassy, used to party(now we are all old) but like her they always welcome everyone, they love so deeply, they take people as is, they are committed, and some of the best people I know.

So after loosing both of these beautiful sisters I know two things,

They are both much of who we are as a family.
    And
I still don’t like tomato juice

    Love to all
And so much thanks to aunt Mildred for helping us be a “loving, kind, and funny” family
