January 3, 1959 – September 28, 2026, age 67
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mark Unger announces his passing on Monday, September 28th, 2026, at the age of 67, at William Osler Health System – Brampton Civic Hospital after a long battle with leukemia and COPD. He is survived by his son, Jacob Unger (Ashley), and his daughter, Sydney Unger (Adam), and his three grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Gwen, siblings Greg and Jennifer, and Lori, the mother of his children.
Mark was supported by Svetlana, who shared many meaningful years and stood by him through the complications of his illnesses. The Unger family would also like to thank his loyal friends Don Graham, Roger Trueman, Jim McCallum, and all those who stayed in touch for their ongoing support.
The second of three children of Dave and Gwen Unger, Mark was born and lived in Willowdale, Toronto, until the age of eight, when he moved with his family to the farm near Caledon East in 1967. He attended Macville, Ellwood and Mayfield schools. He worked for McDonnell Douglas Canada in Malton before developing his own business, Somebuddy’s Cleaning & Restoration, working with insurance companies to restore properties following damage claims. The family home on Ellwood Drive in Bolton became the hub of his life for nearly two decades.
Mark will be remembered for his kindness, his honesty, and his generosity. Most of all, for the love that he had for his family and friends. He could always be counted on for a warm handshake, direct eye contact, and often a humorous comment (or three). Those who knew him will remember his favourite greeting “Howdy” and “Ciao for now” as iconic phrases, ones that became unmistakably him.
For those who remember Mark in his single days, an orange ’72 ’Cuda will forever symbolize that time in his life — along with the Elvis sideburns.
In recent years, Mark’s pride and joy were his three young grandchildren, Ethan, Weston and Maya. Their daily FaceTime visits always brought him joy and a smile.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 25th, from 2:00–5:00 p.m. at St. James Anglican Church, 6025 Old Church Road, Caledon East L7C 1H8.
