Winnie, born August 13, 1933, passed away Thursday, February 17, 2022 in Bradford, Ontario with members of her family at her side.

Born in Timmins, Ontario and orphaned at an early age, Winnie ended up in Bear Lake, Ontario where she met and married the love of her life Bernard.  They had 9 children – Diana, Paul, Ron, Rick, Jim, Brenda, Mark, Pete, and Wayne.  She was a proud and loving grandmother to 15 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

In 1961 Winnie & Bernard moved their growing family to Bolton where they put down roots.  Winnie made sure their home was always a welcoming place, and there was once a time when you would have been hard pressed to find a person in town who hadn’t at some point passed through their doors or shared a meal at their lively crowded table.  For 54 years the grey brick house on the North Hill was the Wilson’s.  Winnie & Bernard built a cottage in Bear Lake and spent many summers making family memories that live on in our hearts and minds.

A lover of sports, you would find her at the arena or baseball diamond not quietly cheering on her kids.  “I want them playing sports, not hanging out on the street corner” was a quote of hers that became law and helped to build strength and character in all her children.

She worked tirelessly as a devoted housewife until the day her youngest entered grade 1 when she added a new job as crossing guard at Ellwood School to her list of duties.  Eventually she left this position to return to her first profession as a mail carrier, which she had started at the age of 9 in Bear Lake carrying the mail bag to and from the train station every day.

She was a strong and caring person who will be missed by all who knew her.

Cremation has taken place.

The Wilson family would like to welcome all to join us for a Celebration of Life Reception on Saturday, June 4, 2022 from 12 noon until 2 o’clock at Sammy’s Grill, 15 Allan Drive, Bolton.

Condolence from Diane Killam on February 26th, 2022 8:40 am

To the entire Wilson Family: I met your mom 43 years ago, where? At the arena of course!! We became fast friends from that day on. We had many great times…she and I…with our husbands…mostly with the kids. Going to hockey in winter, baseball in summer. We had many adventures and misadventures. I have missed her the past few years and will miss her even more. Keep those wonderful memories of a kind, caring, thoughtful person your mother was. I remember when she took Dwayne to the cottage and people there asked her who this kid was. She told them she adopted him. Word spread around the Lake that Winnie has 9 kids and she goes and adopts another one. Is she crazy??? We got a chuckle out of that. We went to play euchre one night and her friends and neighbours asked her what tribe I belonged to. Great memories, fun times. RIP my dear friend.

Condolence from Jessica Wilson on February 27th, 2022 12:18 pm

My dearest family,

Grandma was the glue that held this family together for so many years.
I have fond memories from when I was a child cottaging at Bear Lake, swimming and walking the trails with Grandma and the family. I miss her dearly and miss these times together.

Going to Grandma and Grandpa’s was the place to be. My brother Cliff and I were often taken in loved, fed and cared for. I remember watching sports and game shows on days that I was sick and would stay home from school. I will cherish the memories of cooking and gardening with her and all the memories of countless gatherings she hosted over the years.

I swear I get my love for travel and adventure from Grandma. I loved hearing stories of their travels across the globe. I remember a photo taken in I believe British Columbia hot springs with Grandma, Grandpa and Uncle Wayne that was on the kitchen windowsill. I made it a point to travel to hot springs and waterfalls over the years and when I do, this particular photo comes to mind, and I imagine them there with me.

My heart is with you all and I hope to be able to return to celebrate Grandma’s life and see you all again.

With love from sunny California,
Jessica

Grandma and Jessica

Dear Wilson Family:

I am so very sorry for the loss of your beautiful and special mother.

Winsome was a dear and thoughtful person who always took the time to brighten someone’s day.

I have so many memories of our times together and our long talks and walks up the hill in Bolton and through the cemetery.

I remember our trip to Tadousac in Quebec and she saw the baby whale jump out of the water with its mother and Winsome had tears in her eyes.

She has always been so special to me and I will always hold our many memories in my heart forever.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of her dear family. Remember her well. Her smiles and kindness will live with us all forever.

May she Rest In Peace in God’s Garden.

Sadly missed and forever remembered. My dearest friend and sister-in-law. Love you all. Aunt JoanMarilynHoush
