Bolton King Bob copy

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert M.C. King at Oakville, on Friday, August 7, 2015 at the age of 89 years. Bob King, a gentle man by any definition, loved his family, his church, his sports teams, bad jokes and good cribbage games. He will be missed by his surviving children Rosemary, Andrew, Sylvia and Philip and their families including 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, by stepchildren Katie, Judy, Margaret and Roy and their families, and by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was pre-deceased by his son David and wives Margaret and Barbara.

Bob was born April 9, 1926 and raised in Toronto with sister Mary by parents Sylvester and Jane King. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1947, married Margaret Wilson, and started a long career as a fertilizer chemist with Canada Packers (later becoming a manager with successor companies Brockville Chemicals, Nutrite and Nitrochem). After a bout with polio in 1953, Bob moved his young and growing family to the countryside where he spent many happy hours in his vegetable garden. His second marriage to Barbara Kirkup in 1984 brought him new joy and a new family. Although his past 10 years have been spent fighting Alzheimer’s, Bob always believed he was winning that battle. Many thanks are due to the staff at Northridge Long Term Care Centre.

The family will receive their friends at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) on Monday evening, from 6 – 9 o’clock. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday afternoon, August 11 at 2 o’clock. Interment Morningside Cemetery, Palgrave. In lieu of flowers, Bob wished that donations be directed to the Palgrave United Church, 34 Pine Avenue, Palgrave (see www.palgraveunited.ca),where he was a member for more than 50 years. Condolence from Audrey Jaques on August 9th, 2015 7:35 pm

I too remember Bob as a very kind person and also as having a great sense of humour. When Bob was in the hospital with polio I sent him a card and somehow enclosed my shopping list along with my greetings. I was embarrassed when we visited him and found this out, but Bob said that was OK – it just made him feel like getting right out of bed and going to do the shopping. My sincere condolences to his family. Audrey.

Dear Silvia and family
I always thought your Dad displayed a special determination which he as given to each of you. I have many memories of him. The fact he sold Xmas trees that you could cut means he comes to mind every year. Those family excursions to pick our tree were so much fun!
May your family’s past precious moments be a source of strength.

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Bob had a huge influence on me personally and professionally. He was patient with my eager and frequent questions about technical & life problems. Bob taught me to roll with the punches. I often ask myself , ‘What would Bob do.’

Condolence from Donald Nicol on August 11th, 2015 9:23 am

I just opened my email and found a message from David Firth. I remember Bob and his family with much affection and found him always supportive, patient, and always postivie in his criticism and attitude. I’m sorry I can not be with you today; however, Bob and the Kings are an important part of my continuing, pleasant memories of Palgrave. As you remember with thanksgiving his meannigful life and difficult challenges, I join you in prayers that for him sickness, sorrow, and suffering have passed. He has entered into the joy of his Lord.
Peace, comfort, and strength from God be yours in the coming days. Don

As a neighbour on Duffy’s Lane (old 6th Line Albion) we knew Bob as an avid gardener for sure, and was quite visible planting seeds in spring and harvesting in the fall. He acknowledged our presence as we went on our evening walks past his residence. That is the memory that is most in our minds about him.
