With great sadness, we announce the passing of Retta Hardy on July 10, 2025, at the age of 84.
Born on May 17, 1941, in Kingston, Ontario, Retta left home at just 19 years old, striking out on her own to build a remarkable life and career. She worked in public relations, contributing her talent and tenacity to the Canada Olympic Team, collaborating with advertising professionals at Ad People and others, and lending her fearless voice to the Toronto Star.
Retta was never one to stay quiet — she was strong-willed, witty, and always ready to speak her mind. She met life, and its challenges, with unmatched determination. She loved to travel, was a fiercely competitive bridge player, and she never turned down an awful glass of wine shared with friends or family. Retta lived fully, boldly, and entirely on her own terms.
She was the beloved wife of David Hardy (passed 2019), loving mother to Derek (married to Olivia) and Randy (married to Whitney), and a proud grandmother to Madeline, Alice, Rose, Pierce, and Mia.
Her absence leaves a deep void, but her stories, her spirit, and her strength will remain with us always. She will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
A celebration of Retta’s life will be held in September; details to follow.

I have many shared good times, glasses of wine, on hockey tournaments when Derek and Jason played on the same team. It makes me smile whenever I think of Retta.
Rest in peace dear lady.
