I met Randy on my first day as the new Medical Virologist at the Public Health Lab. From that day on, he became a dear friend and colleague. We shared many challenges and many laughs. His experience and knowledge, his generosity and kindness made every day at work a good one, no matter what was happening. We worked through the first cases of West Nile, bioterrorism post 9/11and SARS. Even after he retired, Randy was happy to come back and help. I will never forget his big smile, his laugh, and his dedication to the work. Blair and I have so many good memories of wonderful times spent with you and Randy, Sheila. We were both so very sad when we heard the news about Randy’s passing. Over the years Roly and I have met you and Randy in the company of The Haennels. I believe the first time was at a play in Toronto. Since that time we have been joint guests at weddings and maybe a special birthday or two.

Thank you for allowing me to say a few words at Randy’s Funeral on behalf of all his friends from hockey and golf (CSMG) who could not attend due to the virus restrictions. There was an amazing outpouring of respect and admiration towards Randy from so many men that considered him a friend. To a man, they all spoke of him as being “one of the good guys”, with an uplifting enthusiasm for life and a big smile!

I was so sorry to hear of Randy’s passing. Randy was one of the most genuine and uncommonly nice individuals I ever had the privilege of working with in the Ontario Public Health Laboratories. His warm and easy smile, calming demeanour and unrelenting willingness to offer assistance wherever requested will be long remembered by those who had the privilege to be associated with him.

I can only echo what everyone feels. These are the stories of how Randy touched our lives. The stories and our way of now hearing his chuckle warm us.

So sorry to learn of Randy’s passing. I’ve known Randy through the Bolton Senior Hockey for 46 years. We were original players back in 1974. I always enjoyed his company, positive personality and cheerful disposition. He will be missed by many.

Many memories growing up with Randy when Uncle Frank dropped him off at our place until he finished his business in our area. Aunt Beryl and Mom and I had many chats about her family. She was so proud of all her children. Love Harry Cheryl and family. And Uncle Shel Lawr.

From yours and our wedding in the summer of 1971, to Bolton 5 years later for us, hockey every Monday night for 40 plus years, old timer hockey tournaments, until my knees gave out, many, many good times with Randy. As others have said, one of the good guys. Sad to have him leave you and Jess.

To Randy’s family, your loss is truly enormous. I only knew Randy as a teammate and tenacious opponent of the CSHL. I enjoyed playing against him as much as did playing on his line. Randy personified sportsmanship with a passion for competition. Randy rarely had a disparaging remark about anyone, even the referees. Randy’s quick smile and easy laughter is something I will remember.To his credit, Randy was in great physical shape, and looked 10 years younger than his real age, it’s sad that he was taken far too young.
