Licensed Funeral Director since 1961

Initiated True Blue Lodge No. 98 A.F. & A.M.  (1967)

R. W. Bro. and Past Master True Blue Lodge No. 98 A.F. & A.M. (1978)

Elected District Deputy Grand Master of Toronto District 7 (1982)

Secretary-Treasurer, Laurel Hill Cemetery

Past Treasurer, Bolton United Church

Dad so gently passed away at Mackenzie Health, Richmond Hill, on Sunday, January 2, 2022, at the age of 80 years.  Paul is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lynne Egan.   Devoted and proud father of John (deceased 1965), Heather, Elaine and Kim.  Dedicated grandfather of Siobhan, Kurtis, Cameron, Madeline and Harrison. Cherished brother of Lois and Tom (deceased) Heppell, Dwight (deceased) and Joanne Egan, Deborah and Hal Brook. Predeceased by his parents Bill and Frances Egan.

Paul cherished his time at Albert College in Belleville for his high school years.  There, he was captain of both the football team, the swim team and developed a love of studying and team sports.   He loved sharing many memories of his fun and sneaky times at Albert College.  After graduating from Albert College, Paul was so dedicated to becoming a funeral director he even turned down the CFL when they tried to recruit him.  His most cherished friendship from his Albert College days was with his roommate, David Smith.  This friendship lead Paul and Lynne to travel many parts of the world to visit Dave.

Paul Egan devoted his life to serving his community by following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He was committed to bringing comfort to those suffering a loss whether they occurred day or night, weekends or holidays. He took great pride in our family business and inspired everyone to put service above self; whether he was vacuuming the carpets, helping to park cars or arranging flowers so they would be just right, he would do anything to help those who were suffering in their darkest days.   He was a pillar and cornerstone of knowledge.  Paul would make time to speak to anyone who needed him and his calm, quiet approach to any problem – in this, he would help to solve it quickly. He treated everyone who passed through the Funeral Home doors like they were his own family and served each and every person with the utmost respect, kindness and attention to detail.  He spoke very rarely of his own difficulties, always inquiring how everyone else was doing. Even facing declining health did not deter him from inquiring about each and every family under the care of the funeral home and asking how he could contribute. His absence will leave a mark on the hearts of his countless friends, colleagues as well as the Egan Funeral Home team whom he always included as family.

He relished the simple things in life; coffee with friends, a good joke, a delicious dinner at Wishbone Restaurant and watching a Sunday night football game.  Paul was so selfless, no matter what he was doing in his personal life, if a family in need required his assistance, he would quietly put on his suit and help the family in need. On his beloved yearly trips to Cape Cod, he would end each day by calling the funeral home, asking for the phone numbers of families we were serving, in order to personally offer his sympathy and reassurance.   While on the Cape, Dad enjoyed morning coffee at Chatham Cookware leaving his American porch friends a taste of Canadian coffee after he travelled home. As well, the Chatham Band Shell was a favourite spot for him every Friday night balanced with a couple of weeknights at the Chatham baseball diamond where scouts were always present finding players to move up to the major leagues.  While on the Cape, a nightly adventure for Dad would be to the Chatham lighthouse with an ice cream in hand.  These were such special times of making memories.

He loved his wife, adored his girls, cherished his siblings and got tremendous joy from watching his grandchildren grow. His beloved dogs were gleefully spoiled and followed him everywhere. The outpouring of love already received from our community will sustain his family in the dark and difficult days ahead, but his passion for service excellence will live on.

First and foremost, Paul Egan was our Dad.  He was the one to hold our hands when we were children and his hand was always warm.  He was the one who threw us up in the air whether he was on land or in a pool and always caught us after the rush of tickles in our bellies.  He was the one who held us until we could breathe again after crying so hard over any traumatic event in our lives.  Dad was always so proud of his three girls.  Dad mentored us, guided us and loved us in his very quiet, special way.  He was a true gentle man, through and through.

Due to current health concerns, our family will keep their families and friends safe and will have a private funeral service at the family funeral home, Egan Funeral Home, Bolton on Friday, January 7, at 2 o’clock.

We invite those who wish to join us through live streaming.  Please click the following link to view Dad’s service:  Live Stream Link.

You can watch the service at a later date if Friday at 2 o’clock is not feasible.

Private interment in the family plot at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bolton.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to Bethell Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 75, Inglewood  L7C 3L6 or True Blue Lodge, c/o Nicholas Brooksbank, 15505 Centreville Creek Road, Caledon L7C 3C3.

Hugs and condolences to you all, Auntie Lynne, Heather, Elaine and Kim. I have the sweetest memory of Uncle Paul driving me as a bride to my wedding. Condolence from Elaine & Joe Gray & Families on January 4th, 2022 4:09 pm

What a loss our community will have. I have known Paul since High School in Brampton. I have cherished those years and will always remember how well he handled the funerals that I attended and also were involved in. He gave all of them, his personal touch. My deepest condolences to his dear wife Lynne and his three wonderful daughters Heather, Elaine and Kim and his sisters and all their families. This Covid-19 is not a great time for a funeral because I know there would not be a building large enough in Caledon to hold all the mourners that would have attended and we are glad that we will be able to be apart of it virtually. God bless your family during these difficult days ahead.

Condolence from Stephanie Axworthy on January 4th, 2022 7:29 pm

I first met Mr. Egan in January 1977. He came by the house for the luncheon after the funeral of my Grandma. I was afraid of him; as seven-year-old, I viewed him as the ‘’bringer of death”. A few decades later, I shared this memory with him and we both chuckled. Our family had the privilege of Mr. Egan organizing the funerals of my Grandpa and in 1997, my father. On that arrangement visit, he, my mom and I sat in the office chatting and he shared his excitement over the arrival of his grand-daughter Siobhan.

In his years of service to the Bolton/Caledon community, Mr. Egan guided the direction of the professionals who worked alongside him, especially Elaine, who demonstrated the same care and compassion of her father, as she assisted with the final arrangements for my mom nearly two years ago. As I mentioned at that time, I can’t imagine using another funeral home, as at Egan’s, all are treated like family. His ‘’work family” learned from the best.

Mrs. Egan, Heather, Elaine and Kim, thank you for sharing your husband and father with our community. I am so very sorry for your loss. May happy memories comfort you at this time.

Mr. Egan, may Flights of Angels Sing Thee to Thy Rest.

Condolence from Paula and Ashley on January 4th, 2022 7:47 pm

The Egan Family,

Our deepest condolences on the loss of an incredible husband and father. Paul (or Mr. Egan as Ashley called him) was such a kind, generous, empathetic man, who told amazing stories. He was the biggest support when we had to burry a husband and father, he was there for all our families funerals and memorials. I have many memories of running into him at coffee time with “the old boys”, and sitting to have a chat and hear the stories they had to offer, or seeing him around town. He will always be a staple in the community and live on in everyone he touched. May the good memories help, and give you comfort at such a hard stage in your lives.

Anyone who has been helped by Paul during a time of need will feel this loss most keenly. He was a gentle, calm and reassuring presence at a time of anxiety and grief. My favourite memory is of him in the doorway of our church kitchen before a funeral, enjoying a cookie and a laugh with the ladies preparing the refreshments; then checking his watch and heading into the service ensuring that every detail was right. This was his calling, his vocation, his offering to God and his community. The fact that he continued to serve us, long after he could have retired, speaks to the convictions he held. Thank you Paul, from the Allengame family, for the numerous times you were there for us. May you rest in peace.

Condolence from Heather Nespolo on January 4th, 2022 8:06 pm

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad. I would often see him at Coffee Time in Bolton, always smiling. He sure was a sweet and kind man. I have been in the Bolton community for over
40 years and been to many services at Egans. You could see how much your Dad cared for those grieving. Your Dad was over and above good to me 26 years ago, when I lost my twin sons. He guided me and helped me tremendously through a very difficult time. I will be forever grateful for his sympathy, compassion and kindness. I am so sorry for your loss. I am thankful your Dad was such a kind man to me, when I couldn’t share my sorrow with anyone. May he rest in eternal piece.

Condolence from Sue Tice on January 5th, 2022 12:05 am

I first met Mr. Egan at my fathers funeral in 1961. I now realize how young he was. I was 11 and he seemed so much older and wiser. Paul took care of the funerals of my family and many friends. Paul went above and beyond to make sure all his people and their families were well taken care of. It was Christmas Eve and I went to my Sisters Grave.
By accident her stone (flat) had been covered by a pile of earth. I called Paul crying and carrying on. Paul Calmly told me what had happened and he would have the problem fixed. Paul was such a gentle man, a good man. When I stopped by the next morning the pile of earth was gone and Vicki’s grave stone had been swept clean. My sincere condolences to the family of Paul Egan, a true gentleman and a wonderful soul. May he Rest in Peace,

Condolence from Charlotte Kelly on January 5th, 2022 9:34 am

I would like to extend my condolences to the Egan Family,
Paul was a special sort of person to say the least. We rented the “little Pink House” from him when we wanted to move back to Bolton a long time ago. We were there for a couple years and he would always check to make sure everything was ok and if we had any issue Paul was all over it, always with a kind word and smile. I remember he was so thrilled when we planted flowers outside the back of the house and thanked us repeatedly saying it gave the people coming into & from the funeral home something pretty to look at. Paul & Lynn even gave us a beautiful wedding present that was totally unnecessary, but that’s the kind of folks they are. When we bought our own house Paul was so happy for us he returned our last month rent as a congratulatory gift, a helping hand for those new home costs.
He was always quick with a wave, a smile, a chat.
A true gentleman in every way.

Condolence from Robert and Maureen Murdock on January 5th, 2022 9:55 am

Paul was first and foremost an individual who embodied the characteristics of a loving, caring, and genuine soul. Deepest condolences to his family and the wider extended Egan circle. His influence spread far and wide and he will live on in the hearts and minds of all he touched. His influence went beyond those sad few times we connected in his professional capacity. As a proud and dedicated Freemason who lived the ideals that we are all brothers, Paul was looked up to as a mentor by young and old alike. We are all a little richer for knowing Paul and now a little poorer for his passing. Until we meet again, old friend.

Condolence from Donna Stoyan Scott on January 5th, 2022 9:59 am

So very sorry for your loss.

The Moffatt family has worked with Paul in too many hard times! Paul was an incredibly kind, gentle, knowledgeable, and compassionate man! We always felt that our family members were remembered in very classy and respectful ways. Paul was a light for us in some of our darkest days! Paul always went above and beyond for our family. As Nancy met him often when she was delivering flowers and Greg saw him at Coffee Time, we were always greeted kindly and while Paul was serious; he always slipped in a good joke He will be very sorely missed and our thoughts and prayers go to his family!

Condolence from Rick Ludwig on January 5th, 2022 11:18 am

Dear Egan family: I had the pleasure of meeting Paul while serving on the OFSA board with him for a number of years. He was the consummate funeral service professional , a real throwback to a generation that understood the profession as a complete life commitment to their community. He loved to share idiosyncratic stories of going the extra mile to give personal attention to people locally and even abroad. I observed that he was a man of particular routine and regimen that allowed him to keep up this level of service and interest over the many years of service to his community. It was a real pleasure to have met him, and I offer my sincere condolences with your loss. The funeral home will be a true legacy to what he stood for and offered to his community and family. Wishing you all strength for the days ahead, also during these difficult times. (P.S. I was in the same Humber class as Elaine.)

Condolence from Sylvia King on January 5th, 2022 1:01 pm

Paul was indeed one in a million. His compassion and dedication will go unsurpassed. I wanted to share an example of how truly wonderful a man this community has lost.
It happened after the graveside internment of my step-father at Laurel Hill, on a horribly miserable Boxing Day with heavy freezing rain pelting down. My mother had gone to the cemetery with Paul in the funeral car. Once back in Caledon East, we were horrified to discover that none of my siblings had brought my mother! But, shortly after, in pulled Paul driving the funeral car, to personally deliver my mom rather than call us to come and pick her up in such awful weather!
Paul has seen our family through many funerals, always with the same compassion, but never as much dedication as that day!
Thank-you to this special man.

I first met Paul Eagan at Guaranteed Funeral Deposits of Ontario (GFD) many years ago. I remember how very helpful Paul in acclimatizing me to GFD. He was a great mentor. I remember a warm, compassionate, interested man who was always impeccably dressed. Paul taught me a great deal in his last year on the GFD Board.

I went on to serve another eight years with GFD Board. I will always remember his kind words and his helpful guidance. In the years that passed, I would occasionally hear from Paul and catch up on the changes that had taken place to the Funeral Homes and what was happening with the family.

Condolence from Mark Musca on January 5th, 2022 3:57 pm

Dear Egan family,

On behalf of the entire Albert College community, please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. As you know, Albert College was near and dear to Paul’s heart and he has been a tremendous supporter of the school over the years. I met Paul on just one occasion when he came to visit the school three years ago, but I have had several telephone conversations since then. What struck me most about Paul was his positive outlook, his strong connections with his Albert classmates, and his love of our school. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Sincerely,
Mark Musca
Head of School, Albert College

I’ve known the family over my many years when living in Bolton, and attended school with Deborah at Ellwood. I have the utmost respect for the whole family. When first, my dad Donald passed away, detail was of priority to condole and ministry to the family through the impeccable service given to us. Paul was that very fellow that saw to every detail at that time and the same from my late mother Grace. Paul was a gentleman, loved a good joke, a good family man and generally a class act, very difficult for anyone to follow. May perpetual light forever shine upon him. I wish-the family my deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences, and every blessing at this time of sorrow. .

Condolence from Paul Byrnes on January 5th, 2022 9:16 pm

Lynne, Elaine, Heather, Kim and all Egan family members,

I was very sorry to read about Paul’s passing. Paul was always a friend of mine and of my parents. Paul helped my mother when my father passed and helped me and my sons when my mother passed, always with care and compassion.

Paul and I became friends in Grade 1 at Bolton Public School. Some of my memories with Paul include: fishing in the Humber river, playing hockey on the frozen Humber river, riding our bicycles to the baseball diamond, tobogganing and skiing on Willow Street, riding horses at a local farm, going to Saturday matinees at the Roxy in Woodbridge and spending hot summer days at Dick’s dam. As we got older, Paul went away to Albert College, and I went away to university, but we always kept connected. After we graduated, it was an honour for me to be asked by Paul and Lynne to be best man at their wedding. Up to the present time, Paul and I kept connected at funeral visitations and at the Bolton Public School reunions.

As has been said over and over again in the condolences, Paul was a gentleman, was dedicated to the community and was a consummate professional. Paul will be missed.

Condolence from Nancy Hopkinson on January 6th, 2022 2:45 pm

Paul Egan has served not just the Caledon community but also the Nobleton area. We at Nobleton United Church have attended many services for members of our church. Many times we had receptions here at our church following the service in Bolton. This gave me many chances to see Paul in action. He was, as everyone agrees, a wonderful caring person who knew just the right thing to do to help everyone. He made sure that some flowers from the funeral got delivered to the church for later use in Sunday services. He stayed and “broke bread” with the community following a service. He was always immaculate in his appearance and looked after every detail of the services held, from closing the doors at the right time, to adding more chairs when needed, to guiding the bereaved to their seats. I admired him and considered him as someone approachable and kind.

Condolence from Michael & Candace Walmsley on January 6th, 2022 6:07 pm

To the Egan Family:
We were very saddened to hear of Paul’s passing. Back in 1977, we moved to Bolton and Paul was one of the first “Boltonites” to welcome us. He was always a very pleasant and caring individual who loved his town and cherished his family. Many a time was spent listening to Paul relate stories of his childhood. Tobogganing down the North Hill of Hwy. 50 and surviving the escapade was a memory that he delighted in telling! Besides being a true friend, Paul was a brother to me in True Blue Lodge. In fact, Paul was my sponsor when I joined the Lodge and continued as an important mentor right up to the current time. Bolton has lost a true champion and True Blue Lodge has lost its main pillar. His life, though, will continue to inspire and lead us all by the excellence that was Paul Egan.

We would sit down in the lounge and tell stories about our experiences on the Cape. I remember first meeting Paul back in 1988, he was a stickler for having a clean funeral home. He took so much pride in making sure the home was perfect. I’m going to miss all the great jokes & and laughter we shared together. Rest In Peace Paul.

Dear Egan Family and Staff;
I just wanted to pay tribute to Paul for all of his efforts on behalf of Funeral Service. It is obvious by the many comments on this site that the impact he had on Bolton & area during his career was immense. Paul was one of those Funeral Directors you had to admire. He walked in quiet ways, but when he spoke he had much to say. I am honored to consider him a colleague, but also a friend. He will be missed.

Condolence from Cheryl Robb on January 7th, 2022 9:34 am

My heart goes out to the Egan ladies and their families. Tough when you are on the other side and needing your own support during this difficult time. Know that the entire community is with you during this time of loss. We all have fond memories of your Dad including the time we got scolded as kids for playing hide and seek in the funeral home! Even though we saw your Dad during most difficult times it really felt like coming home to have a safe place to fall just when you needed it most. Elaine, I am blessed to call you my friend and you have taken the reigns effortlessly and seamlessly and the legacy your Dad has left will be safe in your hands. I am sure he is extremely proud. Wish we could be there however things are exactly as they are meant to be. Hugs prayers and healing being sent your way.

Condolence from LeeAnne Rescorl on January 7th, 2022 11:33 am

To the entire Egan family,
Paul was an irreplaceable icon in our community. He was “True Blue” just like his lodge. If there was an event taking place you could guarantee that Paul was present. We could never imagine where he found the time to involve himself in such a devoted manner but he did. We know this came at a cost to him and his family and for this we thank you all.
No matter what kind of day Paul was having, if you encountered him he engaged you fully and made you feel like you were the priority. He was accommodating, compassionate, professional, humble, intelligent and the list goes on. There are not enough words to describe him. He touched the lives of so many and will remain in their memories forever.
Paul has been a friend to our family for almost 50 years, We are honoured to have known him and to be able to have called him a friend. We will cherish his memory not with saddness because he is gone but as an inspiration going forward. He set the bar very high and we can only aspire to carry on in the manner he displayed. You will be sorely missed and never forgotten.
The Rescorl Family

Condolence from Brenda and David Duncan on January 9th, 2022 5:24 pm

To Elaine and the Egan Families
I remember Paul from my days of working part time at Northern Self Storage in Bolton. When Egan’s was undergoing extensive renovations, Paul was a regular at Northern. He was truly a gentleman, soft spoken, always with a kind word. Having experienced Elaine’s and her staff’s kindness and expertise when dealing with my Mom, Doris’ funeral arrangements, I’m sure you will have no problem replicating that for Paul. Notwithstanding the fact that you are professionals, I know it will be hard for you. Know that you have the love and support of the community, as is evidenced by all these wonderful condolences and memories.
God Bless

Condolence from David Rutherford on January 10th, 2022 7:06 pm

Paul’s life is one that would truly answer the question, what can I do for my community? When he joined anything he made sure he wasn’t just a joiner but a contributor. This is true as a United Church goer, a Mason, a member of the Bolton Fair Board and a true friend to all he met. His devotion to his vocation was total and to his children complete.
I first met Paul at my initiation into Masonry and he became a mentor for my Masonic journey.
Lea and I were so sad to see his passing in Saturday’s Star. Our frequent visits to Egans will never be the same but his legend will live on in his family. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
David and Lea Rutherford

Condolence from Harry Robb on January 10th, 2022 9:58 pm

I have never ever witnessed so many tributes to one person and Paul you deserve every last one. Paul was one of those guys you automatically liked when you first met. It was a pleasure to be in your company at any time. You had a great business sense, a wonderful sense of humor not often seen in funeral directors and always a smile with a purely positive outlook. You welcomed me to Bolton in 1979 as your banker (Royal Bank) and I was completely saddened to learn of your passing. All that is left to do is offer my deepest condolences to all of the Egan family.

We were very sorry to hear of Paul’s passing. The town will not be the same without him but he will remain prominent in the memories of many. Dad (Richard) always spoke fondly of him and considered him a solid friend. He was so kind and compassionate to both Mom and I when Dad died (as I had always expected he would be). We felt very comfortable beside him in some of our most vulnerable moments. He was the truest definition of a gentleman and will be greatly missed. All the best to the whole family in this sad time.

Condolence from Rev. Louise Mahood on January 13th, 2022 8:47 am

A wonderful obituary for a truly remarkable man. I had the pleasure of working with Paul and the crew at Egan’s FH in the mid 1990’s. I learned a great deal from Paul as I settle into my ministry career. And yes, a respectful man who would both horrified and baffled at the cultural decline in decorum and polite behaviour.

May all of the Egan family and team at Egan Funeral Home be comforted during your bereavement.
Blessings,

Condolence from Hon. John McDermid P.C. on January 15th, 2022 4:08 pm

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Paul. We go back to Albert College days. I was on the football teams with Paul, a very good player. We continue to support our Alma Mater and have attended many a reunion together. He was the son of an undertaker as was Barry Brownlee. Paul and Barry had cards made up, which stated “Brownlee and Egan. Undertakers” and kept them in their football helmets. When an opposing player was down and moaning, a card appeared on their chests offering their services. Paul always enjoyed a good laugh. He will be missed by his family, his friends and all those who used his services. Paul, you have truly earned your eternal rest. Safe flight old friend.

It is so hard to find words that express what our little community has lost with Paul’s passing. Reading these condolences give us an idea of what Paul meant to so many people.

He and I have worked side by side, as treasurer and secretary of True Blue Lodge for about 30 years. I have a box full of hundreds of his witty little personal messages that were included on the exchange of every correspondence, all typed on yellow post-it notes. He loved his typewriter! always happy to meet….so sorry to part….but we will meet again

It was always a pleasure (those who have worked with Paul will understand) to work with Paul and his family prior to my own retirement. He was always conscientious and careful in serving families in grief and so I could always be confident that he and the staff would co-operate with me as a priest while attending to the needs of families and his duties as a funeral director. His advice was always appreciated.
My regards to the family and staff. You can be proud of him; may your memories comfort you.

Condolence from Carol Porter (Moss) on April 22nd, 2023 1:54 pm

Mr. Egan was so kind when we used to meet him at the funeral home for family funerals. You just wanted to sit and spend time with him. He said he never touched a drink in his life and I thought well if you become a man like Mr. Egan perhaps we should all abstain from it. I also asked him about funerals for close family and he said that another funeral director would step in sometimes. He was a true gift and blessing to all who met him. I’m thankful to have those moments with him. I also am appreciative of his care of my family who rest in laurel Hill cemetery.
