Today, our hearts are broken! Paolo was a great friend who always made the time to listen to anyone. Hailey, Abbey and Noah will always remember the times we went fishing at “Paolo’s Land” and how many times my kids snagged their hooks on the brush, while Paolo would quickly re-attache another hook and worm so the kids could catch and release the Rainbow trout. Some of our best memories were the breakfast we would all share together at the diner in town after our fishing trip, and Paolo’s love for corned beef hash. Paolo was the “king” of the street, and his royal presence will forever be missed. He was a good friend, kind person, and great guy to know and be around. He will be missed by all of us. Rest in peace my brother, you are in God’s hands now. Robert, Julia, Hailey, Abbigale and Noah.

When my siblings and I reminisce about our fondest memories at St. Cornelius, we were often reminded of the joy and laughter we experienced while being in Mr. De Rango’s (“Mr. D”) grade 7 or 8 class. Over the Christmas holidays I had connected with a childhood friend, and after 12 years, we spent most of the night telling stories about all the funny times we had with Mr. D. It was with great sadness to hear that our community has lost such a special teacher. He will be missed by so many graduates of the St. Cornelius Elementary School.

Our hearts go out to his family and friends,

Condolence from Marisa Di Leo on January 3rd, 2018 2:10 pm

Mr. DeRango was so much more than a teacher; he was the type of mentor, support system, and positive influence that I aspire to be now that I’m becoming a teacher myself. He taught me so much but what I’ll remember most was his kindness and how much he cared about his students. Mr. D never forgot a single one of us; even into my university years I would run into him in town and he would always stop to give me a hug and see how I was doing, and I had him in grade 8. He was a wonderful man with the biggest heart and my whole family sends love and condolences. He’ll be deeply missed by all of us.

Condolence from Lori McCannel on January 3rd, 2018 6:06 pm

The McCannel Family

We are deeply saddened to hear about the loss of such a wonderful man and inspirational teacher who touched so many lives in the St. Cornelius school community.

Our daughters Erin and Lisa were so very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be taught by Mr D. He had such a warm and caring way with all the students. The girls still talk about the epic class parties that he arranged!

Lisa and I bumped into Paulo last fall and of course he remembered her even 13 years after she graduated from his grade 8 class! We had the opportunity to catch up and thank him for all he had done for the girls. He was so interested in what they were doing and we both were amazed at how time flies.

Condolences to the family who I know were so proud. I often asked Anna about Paulo and I can recall at how she would just glow with pride when talking about her wonderful son.

A special man who will be sorely missed by many. Another angel in heaven. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Both my sisters and I had the pleasure of having Mr. D as a teacher and coach at St. Cornelius. It is heartbreaking to hear the news of his passing as he was such a great teacher and role model to all three of us. When we look back and discuss all of our memories from elementary school, Mr. D is mentioned in every one. He was one of the most genuine human beings and cared about his students in and out of the classroom. He volunteered his own time before and after school to coach many teams and help develop his students in all aspects. We will always appreciate and remember him for this. He will be greatly missed as an educator, coach, and valuable member of our community.

Rest in Peace Mr. D.

Paulo is and will always be a truely genuine individual. One of the many qualities that Paul posesses is his sense of humour . He was the only person that could make me laugh just by the sheer sound of his own genuine laugh . Paul is family . We have spent only great times together on family trips , family bbq s and of course the hundreds of bocci and soccer games .
I will never forget the laughs we’ve had and the personal conversation I shared with him
we ll all miss you
Rest In Peace Paulo

My condolences to the entire De Rango

Condolence from Fantin Family on January 4th, 2018 1:16 am

We are heartbroken over the loss of a truly wonderful man and a bright light, gone far too soon. Madeline has been devastated by the loss of her most favourite teacher. Saying goodbye seems impossible. She cherished the two years she spent in Mr D’s class, where he was an amazing educator and mentor to her, as he was to so many others.

Our thoughts are with Mr. DeRango’s family and friends, who must be so very proud of the legacy he is leaving behind with each and every life he has so greatly touched and impacted.
My heart hurts for all his loved ones, and I hope you are able to find strength in one another, until you see him again in God’s grace.

“When it hurts to look back and you are afraid to look ahead, just look beside you and there your loved ones will be.”

Our most heartfelt condolences.
Vik, Sarina, Madeline and Julian Fantin

Condolence from Kirstie on January 4th, 2018 12:11 pm

My condolences to the De Rango family and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

My self, my brother Zach and my brother Dylan all had the pleasure of being in his class at St Cornelius.
I was not an easy girl to teach, especially at that age and Mr. D always showed patience with me. He never gave up on me and I will remember that forever. We had lots of talks and he was one of my biggest supporters all along the way.
I was a real pain but he was committed. My mom has fond memories of him as well and they always had great discussions.

I worked with Anna De Rango at Foodland and told her I was in his class in grade 8. She always spoke of her son so proudly. We talked about him a lot and it was always fun bumping into him later on in life.
Clearly, he left his mark on everyone who knew him.

Mr D is a legend.

Kirstie,

Condolence from Moire Balzan on January 5th, 2018 9:23 am

After almost 20 years of having 5 children attend St. Cornelius School, i can honestly say that Paolo was not only the favorite teacher of all my children but of myself as well. He was an exceptional teacher who somehow saw each students’ potential and guided them until it blossomed. Whether it was Math or Chess Club, Athletics or even Drama, he was able to bring out the best you had to give. As a parent it was easy to see why he was the favorite of every student, that warm smile and quick wit drew me in as well until i was also able to call him friend. It was impossible to say no to him whenever he asked for assistance with field trips, prop design or grade 8 Graduation ceremonies as i always knew he would make me laugh all day…….he even brought out the best in me. He allowed me to use my talents to help wherever i could and never let me forget how much he appreciated it. I will never forget his warmth and friendship. My sincerest condolences to the DeRango family. May the thought and prayers of all that knew him help you through this most difficult time.

I have no words. I am deeply saddened to hear of Mr. D’s passing. To the DeRango family my sincerest condolences. He truly was an amazing man. We lost an angel on January 2, 2018.

Mr. D was definitely someone special. 17 years ago he taught my grade 6 class and coached a few of my school soccer teams. His impression on my life would make me want to continue to stop by to visits when I was in Caledon just to check in with my old friend. I will forever miss our yearly catchups, your concern for my happiness and that contagious smile. Thank you for teaching me respect as a child and for being so positive towards my growth even though I was a pretty difficult student to deal with.

My thoughts and prayers and with the DeRango family and his dear friends. So sorry for your loss. God bless you.

How does one even begin to pay tribute to a person who has touched so many minds, hearts and lives over many years. Paolo was the truest friend, most empathetic educator, kindest colleague and finest gentleman ever. He brought the gift of making people come together, respecting and caring for each other, serving others quietly and expecting nothing in return. Paolo’s humour was rooted in enjoying people, life, and all that it offered him. He seized the moment and was good to everyone whose life he touched. It is an honour to have worked with Paolo, and more importantly, to have known him as a dear friend. Paolo, may God hold you in the palm of His hands. RIP my sweet friend. Our sincerest condolences to the DeRango family for your loss.

Condolence from James Casey Baldwin on January 5th, 2018 1:15 pm

My sincerest condolences to the DeRango family.
He was the best school teacher that I ever had. If I did not have him for Gr. 4, Gr. 6 and Gr. 8 where he straightened me out, I would not be the person I am today. I owe everything that I am right now to those three years where he didn’t give up on me.
I visited every time I passed through Caledon East and stopped in to tell and show him my accomplishments.
The last time I visited was when I graduated University with my Engineering degree. He was so impressed with how far I had come. He mentioned that he started and continued to use me as an example to all his current students, I was and still am speechless.
I regret not having the chance to stop by more recently when I obtained my P.Eng. designation, to tell him that I had made it and that it was all thanks to him.
I can only imagine the multiple other student’s lives he re-shaped.
This is truly a great loss. My thoughts, and prayers to the DeRango family.

Condolence from Jaclynn Deveaux-Matthews on January 7th, 2018 10:53 am

Sometimes in our lives we are fortunate enough to cross paths with someone who leaves a lasting impression in our hearts.

I was blessed to be able to work with Paolo for a few brief years during my beginning years as a teacher. His words of encouragement and the spot-on advice he readily offered were second only to the lessons he taught by the way he lived. His jovial attitude, the moments of whimsy, his unwavering willingness to help, his welcoming smile and the stories he shared are lessons I keep with me.

It’s impossible to think of Mr. DeRango without smiling. As I stood at St. John’s to offer my prayers and say goodbye, I couldn’t help but think that those of us there, filling the Church beyond capacity, represented only the smallest fraction of the people who were touched by his incredible presence.

I am better teacher and a better person for having known him.

Paolo was a great guy. I never got to work with him but for years we were at all the same workshops. I liked sitting by him as we shared the same views in all the ” new methods ” on how to teach. He had a big heart and a great sense of humour. You will be missed.

Our sincere condolences to the DeRango family…

PAOLO DERANGO- AKA “Mr. D”, “My Buddy”, “Teddy Bear” “Tough guy”

What a joy to have known such a wonderful teacher, colleague, and friend for almost 18 years!

As one of Paolo’s colleagues, I have had the privilege to work alongside such a fun-loving, dedicated, and hardworking teacher. I will definitely hold so many fond memories close to my heart. I will miss our day-to-day interactions, our coaching experiences, as well as planning graduation, and attending school excursions together to Camp Muskoka, Quebec, Ottawa, or Montreal. Muskoka was his favourite –he loved the outdoors, the campfires, and of course singing karaoke at the student dance on the last night! Everyone would gather around to watch the talented “Mr. D” belt out his favourite tunes. I especially enjoyed our time coaching soccer and track & field. He would claim I was “too soft” and order students to complete many more sprints or pushups than planned. Every team member would always attempt to complete the task and “suck-it-up” – never wanting to disappoint the ‘tough guy’, and for fear he would add more! He was very proud of the students he coached in ‘shot put’ who often went on to place in the top 10 of our various interschool Meets.

Paolo taught both my children during their grade 8 year. It was a big deal to finally get into “Mr. D’s” class. One of my son’s best memories is the “Hairspray” dance the class performed during the annual talent show. Mr. D was never too shy to get in on the fun times! He was an instant hit when he arrived on stage in a dress, wig, and high heels! Although he could be quite the character and ‘funny guy’, Mr. D instilled in his students the importance of time management and hard work. There was always an assignment due or a math chapter task to complete, but many students always felt inspired to complete their work to the best of their ability – knowing that they would feel good about themselves and that Mr. D would be proud.

I will miss my “buddy” and all the special times we have shared. Although his leaving brings sadness, each memory truly brings a smile…and a laugh.
Please know that we will never forget this kind and gentle soul.

May all of you find comfort in the happy memories you have of such a wonderful man.

Patient, kind, and compassionate
