Fourth generation farmer of Fifth Line East, Chinguacousy Township
Newton John Henry Little, died peacefully in Ottawa on Thursday, November 24, 2016 at the age of 90 years, beloved husband of the late Lorna Hillyard. He was a wise and compassionate dad of Margaret, Laureen (Ian van Stalduinen) and Gwen (Paul Beauchemin), and playful Grandpa of Eric, Pieter, Nicole, James, Matthys and Anna. He was the youngest child of Irwin Henry and Jennie (Raine) Little, a brother of Lester (deceased) and Florence Larose (deceased). He will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He had a wonderful life full of hard work, adventure, and travel. Newton was proud to be a dairy farmer, a member of Flowerlea Co-operative Dairy, Tullamore Landowners, the Committee for an Independent Canada (now Council of Canadians), the Ontario Flying Farmers, SHARE Agriculture Foundation, and a long-time supporter of Mayfield United Church. Newton and Lorna travelled to Russia in the early 1970s, sailed down the Nile in a felucca, and spent months in Belize on behalf of SHARE. He learned how to fly and flew in his 4-seater plane to the West and East coasts and up to the Yukon. With his terrific sense of humour he made friends easily across generations and all walks of life. Above all, he was passionate about politics and read voraciously about all things political.
The family will receive their friends at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) Sunday afternoon, November 27th from 1 – 4 pm. Funeral service will be held in Mayfield United Church, 12496 Dixie Road, Caledon on Monday morning, November 28th at 11 o’clock. Following a reception in the church hall interment will take place in Providence Cemetery, Caledon. I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to the whole Little family. Marg Foster and I spent many hours in your home on Torbram Road interviewing listening to Lorna’s history and I believe we met you, Margaret, at one of those visits. Your Dad of course was out on the tractor in those days. Most interesting and wonderful people. Newton and his sister, Florence. always enjoyed the heritage bus tours.

We have great memories of our families growing up together. Thinking of you at this difficult time.
Newton was great friend and relative to my father Irwin Maltby, and I was saddened to learn of his passing. Every time I visited with my father he would be sure to include news of Newton’s travels and adventures. As a child visiting the Little farm with my parents, I was awestruck by Newton’s love of flying small aircraft. Three decades later as my stepson began his flying career and I would ride along for the view, I better appreciated why Newton loved to talk about flying with us.
It has been years since I have met Lauren or Gwen, but I would like to pass along my sympathies to you and your families.

Margaret, I can always remember you and Shirley were the only two girls born that year and I think at Sunday school there would be about 10 boys and you two. Memories are so important. My condolences to all the Little family in the passing of Newton. I last visited with Newton in Ottawa last June, and previously in Manatick. He always enjoyed the unexpected visit. Sorry I was not available to share the memories with you personally.

Our condolences to to the Little family on the passing of Newton. We visited from time to time and always were inspired with wit and knowledge especially dealing with the latest news and politics. CBC was usually on the drive shed radio.
He allowed us t keep our aircraft tied down just outside his hangar. I maintained his Cessna 182 for a number of years. He kept it in good shape. We would often talk about their extended trips across the country. At that time perhaps semi retired, he always kept himself busy around the farm. There were lots of tools in the drive shed that were available and he welcomed me to use them too. Lots of fond memories! We will miss him but never forget him.

Newton and Lorna were such a wonderful couple who valued relationships, family, education, civic responsibility and faith. Bob and I remember his legacy of planting thousands of trees. I was so happy to visit Newton in Ottawa on one occasion. He was always up for a theological or political banter. Rest well Newton !
