Brunner Web

December 10, 1944 – February 20, 2022

On Sunday, February 20, 2022, at home in Nobleton, with his wife by his side, after several years of health challenges.

Beloved husband and soulmate of Hazel (nee Robinson) for 50 years. Cherished father of Heidi (Jason) and Monika (Frank).  Adoring Papa to Sarah, Jayme, Luca, Brianne, Nolan and Cordelia.  Beloved brother of Bruno (Maria).  Predeceased by his youngest daughter Andrea and his brother Peter (Astrid).

Markus was born in Baselland, Switzerland in 1944.  He came to Canada when he was 21 on a travel adventure for a year, met Hazel in a grocery store and then made their life together in Canada.  Hazel, like all of us, was captured by his engaging smile and that twinkle in his eyes.

A passionate gardener, fisherman, cigar lover and discovered later in life, an unbelievable metal furniture designer.  His love for life and his family and his unwavering positive outlook will be carried on through everyone who loved him.  He taught each of us to live our lives with optimism, gratitude & dignity and to never complain.

Markus will be dearly missed by his extended family and friends who loved him so much both here in Canada and in Switzerland.

Visitation will be held at Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) on Wednesday, February 23rd between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 24th at Sacred Heart Parish located at 14485 Jane Street in King City.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Markus’ memory to St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto would be appreciated.

Rene &JoanAnn Bindi
We both extend our deepest condolences to Hazel and family. Having known Markus and Hazel through both our mutual love of our grandchildren .Markus expressed to us his admiration of his son in law which was evident whenever we participated in family gatherings.
Markus’s philosophy in life was never give up under any hardship …
Markus , had the tenacity to overcome issues most men would have succumbed earlier in life but he fooled everyone ……..he lived his way until the end……….

Condolence from Ron Hingston on February 22nd, 2022 7:41 pm

My deepest condolences . My 28 years in Nobleton would not have been the same without the Brunner family. The 3 girls all baby sat my son and daughter . Markus was very positive man , very handy at anything. We shared veggie plants for our gardens. Once I gave him 2 wheel and some steel panels . A day later he produced a heavy duty trailer for my lawn tractor . A cold drink on the deck. A Great friend indeed. You will be missed . Rest in Peace Markus …..

Condolence from erika gyger on February 23rd, 2022 11:56 am

The Gyger family sends their condolence to you Hazel and all the family. I met Hazel and Markus in 1979. My husband Hubi and Markus grew up 2 houses apart in Aesch Switzerland. Both were proud Swizz guys! We become close friends, sharing many great times. Hazel and Markus built a wonderful home. They had Irish Setters named Red, who were loved and spoiled by all. Markus always showed a great strength of character and positive attitude. He accepted what was, and carried on in his own way. He had a great love of gardening; built on his knowledge adapted new methods making his property a beautiful place. He loved sharing this joy with my mother Herta. He had a rare gift. His pride and love of his girls and grandchildren were his joy. You were his everything! Love to all from Erika, Hubert, Paul, Amy, Kurt, Sara Gyger.

Condolence from Bruno, Maria, Gaby, Michi, Nadine, Pascal on February 23rd, 2022 5:20 pm

Our dearest and sincerest condolences to Hazel and the entire family. Markus was an inspiration to us all, to be kind and cherish every moment, to go through life with optimism, and to love his dearest, above all you, his family. After so many years in Canada, Markus still managed to make the distance feel small. He was always there. Markus’ visits to Switzerland were a happening for the entire family and a great joy for everyone. Your hospitality in Canada was unmatched. We share so many great memories with Markus, which will continue to live on. As will his spirit to accept life as it is, and enjoy everything in it. We wish you all the strength and courage in the world for this difficult time ahead. Love from Switzerland.

Condolence from Julie Rodney Chessman on February 24th, 2022 12:44 am

I have many very fond memories of our neighbours for many years. The Brunner family were lovely people. My dad and Markus were great fishing buddies. And Hazel and my dad used to tease each other, with lots of laughter. My mom and Hazel were from the same neighborhood in N Ireland and Friendships between “back home” and Canada made a special connection between us. I loved taking Reddie for walks and learned some “Swiss” commands from Mr. Brunner and also how to count to 10. The girls were born and were so very special to us all. It has been wonderful staying “in touch” through social media. Nothing but fond memories of the Brunner family. Rest in peace, Mr Brunner. Love to you all. Julie Rodney Chessman.
