Kenneth Paul Stuart Stanbury passed away peacefully on April 22, 2023 surrounded by the love of his family, just shy of his 81st birthday. Beloved husband to Deanne Dennison. Loving father of Deborah, Stuart (Cassandra) and Kimberley (Stephen) from his marriage to Beth Stanbury (nee Kerr). Fondly remembered by his stepdaughter Sheila Dimas and her husband Bob. Proud grandfather to Robbie and Grayson Stanbury, Rachel Gould, and step-grandfather to Katherine and Christopher Dimas.

Paul was the eldest son of the late Kenneth C. Stanbury and Lena G. Stanbury (nee Reeve) and is survived by his brothers, Donald and James (Brenda) who he loved dearly. Cherished by his nieces, nephews, and many cousins for the role he played in keeping our family connected.

Paul taught mathematics in North York at Newtonbrook Secondary School, Emery C.I., and William Lyon Mackenzie C.I. He coached many baseball and basketball teams, convening Phoenix Baseball and York Region Basketball leagues.

A lifelong Presbyterian, he served the church faithfully as an elder at Knox Presbyterian Church in Agincourt, Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church, and St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Vaughan.

He enjoyed playing bridge and this became a favourite retirement activity, he and Deanne enjoyed games throughout North America and met many friends through their love of bridge.

Paul was a man of faith and a true friend. He walked the walk and talked the talk.
He will be sorely missed by everyone he knew but especially those from St. Paul’s Vaughan. How fitting the last church he served was St. Paul’s.
My love to Deanne and all the family. May your memories hold you strong.

Was JUST thinking of Paul on a bus ride on the Yonge Street Viva bus last night.
One of those “nudges” perhaps. Thankful to have connected over the years in so many ways, MOST connected to the Presbyterian Church, not all!
Prayers for the families and all of those lives he affected over the years.

I remember meeting Paul at the University of Western Ontario where he was a member of the Westminster Club on campus. We connected and I very much enjoyed his company. Many years later I met Paul at a General Assembly and became re-acquainted. Then shortly after that met him again at Richmond Hill while I was minister at St. Andrew’s Newmarket.
My condolences to Paul’s family and extended family.

Condolence from Patty Valliere Campbell on April 26th, 2023 8:11 pm

Paul Stanbury made math class at Emery bearable for this non-mathie. Kind and encouraging always, he told me if I promised never to take math again he would allow me to squeak by and skip the final exam in calculus! I’ve kept faith in my gladly given promise, Mr Stanbury! And he certainly kept faith in his life, a modest gentleman always full of grace and warmth to those of us fortunate enough to have him as our teacher. Well done, good and faithful servant…

It was very sad to hear of Paul’s passing. I started my teaching career at Emery Collegiate in 1974, where I had the pleasure of knowing Paul, a quiet and very dedicated educator.

I was especially impressed by his athletic abilities in coaching basketball and baseball, as well as his cerebral abilities in coaching the Emery Chess Club. Paul will be greatly missed.

My condolences to Paul’s family, who can take comfort in knowing that he helped improve the lives of so many who knew him.

Condolence from Georgie and Dave Thorneloe on May 3rd, 2023 4:15 pm

We were deeply saddened to hear of Paul’s passing. Georgie and I both attended Emery C.I. in the early 70’s. Paul was a wonderful teacher for two mediocre math students. He was so patient and encouraging. He was a model of professionalism balanced with a genuine concern for each of his student’s success both in class, on the basketball court and in life. He quietly lived his faith. We cherish our memories,
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the many whose lives were enriched by knowing Paul.

Condolence from Chris & Ernie Collins on May 3rd, 2023 7:19 pm

Condolence from Cynthia Parsons on May 5th, 2023 6:48 pm

Dear Deanne, Stanbury and Dumas families,
I first knew Mr. Stanbury as a mathematics teacher. He was very dedicated to his students, respectful of them and taught with a great sense of fun.
He later became a student in the Cardiac Rehab Program at Mackenzie Health and I became his teacher. He was a fast learner and went on to volunteer in the program- as ever showing his commitment and caring for community.
He was a person who cared about and for others.
It was my privilege to know him.
My thoughts are with all of you at this difficult time.
Cynthia Parsons
