Condolence from Clare Cooney on October 8th, 2012 9:11 pm

To a very good man & special teacher. I was most fortunate to have John as my grade 8 teacher at PEPS. Many years later Marilyn & I were again fortunate in having John as the Principal of PEPS when our two children were students.

A wonderful person. We need more education leaders like John. After he retired I bumped into John & his friend Don Richardson having coffee a few times. In my opinion these were the two stars of the Dufferin Education System.
Sincere Condolence’s to the Loughheed family.

Condolence from Donna Douglas on October 15th, 2012 5:51 pm

Hello to John Lougheed’s family. My grade 7 teacher. My grade 8 teacher. The principal at Princess Elizabeth Public School. John Lougheed was fearsome to me as a child… until he smiled. And that smile took away the fear of the stern ‘boss’ of the school.

John listened patiently in 1960 when I made a plea for girls, as well as boys, in grade 8 to be responsible for hoisting the flag each morning outside in the school garden. He listened patiently when I came up for an idea for the senior elementary students who ‘hung around’ during recess to take out a net and volleyball and rotate through being net holders while we played.

He understood, I think, and he was gracious. However, feminism was at its beginning and while the senior students got to play volleyball outside even in the winter, the girls did not get to participate in the flag raising rotation.

I have his signature on several report cards. I have the memory of the man in my soul.

You have laid to rest a human being who influenced many in a positive way. I’m sorry I didn’t know about his funeral until this afternoon.

~Donna
