I so enjoyed my association with Jan. He was always fun to visit with in the hunt field and at all manner of CRC events. It feels like an era of true horsemen is drawing to a close with the loss of Jan. We will miss him very much.

Condolence from Denya Massey (Treviranus) Clarke on March 16th, 2014 11:46 am

I am so sorry to learn that Jan has died, as he had a special place in my early life in Toronto. In the ’70’s, Jan and I both competed in the sport of 3 Day Eventing. He was a tough competitor during the competition, and he really wanted to win! Off his horse, a wonderful grey horse, he was such a gentleman, and always gracious. As I was in my early 20’s, I was totally impressed that a man in his 50’s was eventing! Can you imagine! But he was fit, determined, and a trendsetter, as men now commonly event in their 50’s, but not so much back then. I ran into him once downtown years later, he in a suit – something I had never seen! He recognized me, and took me to lunch! What a nice thing to do for a young person – a fancy lunch, a treat! A few years ago, I saw him at a beagling meet, and yet again, despite my changes with age, he recognized me. He didn’t seem changed at all.
What a fine man. My sympathies to Mrs. Seyfried.

I am saddened to hear of Jan’s passing. I remember him with great fondness, from my early days in Combined Training competitions. He was a tremendous help to me in finding my “lifetime” horse oh so many years ago, and he was just an institution on the Horse Trials circuit. Such a gentle man. He will be missed.

Pat and Family, I was so sad to hear of Jan’s death. I have such fond memories of Debbie French and I, hunting so often with you and Jan nearby. I recall at one hunt that Jan complimented Debbie and me on the care we took to turn out our horses. Coming from him it was like winning the lottery. I will think of him and enjoyable conversations about horses and finance. A principled gentlemen and so very well respected. My deepest condolences to you.

So sad to hear about Jan’s passing. It was so nice to get to know Jan through the Hunt Club and I was fortunate to work closely with Jan and Pat with their work as loyal friends of OAC at the University of Guelph.

Mrs. Seyfried, David & Family
I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Seyfried’s passing. Working for him, and caring for your horses was the greatest experience for me growing up. I will always remember the chicken noodle soup lunches and the impeccably clean grey horses for the Royal Winter Fair. Mr. Seyfried was a true horseman, and I am grateful for all the knowledge and opportunity he gave me in my teen years.
I will be thinking of you in this sad time, my deepest sympathy to everyone.
Lisa

Condolence from Tina Walker on March 20th, 2014 4:10 pm

Dear Pat,

I was so sorry to hear of Jan’s passing. He was to me the epitome of a gentleman and true equestrian. I have, on several occasions, sought his advice on some problem or other I was having with a young horse and his advice was always invaluable.
You and Jan would arrive at the meet so beautifully turned out it was a standard for the rest of us to aspire.

When Jan retired from riding in the hunt field and he offered me his beautiful hunt horse, Cassie, I was so honoured, she is such a lovely mare and she will be hunting with ECH again this year. His memory will not be far from my thoughts.

My sincere condolences to you Pat and your family

Condolence from john sanders on March 23rd, 2014 8:14 pm

With regret, I was unable to attend the memorial held for Jan today (I believe the location was where I first met Jan). Aside from sharing many competitive experiences at 3-day events and horse trials during the 1970’s and 1980’s I know that we both had a great respect for the many rewards of a day spent foxhunting on a good horse. We also shared an interest in breeding good poultry and for a number of years we enjoyed an annual visit at Royal Winter Fair time, cooping in our Plymouth Rocks, (Jan and and David’s being the Partridge variety and mine the Barred).

Jan continued to be an athletic and very effective rider over quite a span of years, always ready to compete, to take on the challenge of a young horse and and to hone his equestrian skills, even when he had advanced to well above the average age of his competitors. His example in this respect has been an inspiration to me and I had found myself thinking of Jan a number of times over the past 3 years as I began to do a little regular riding again and re-joined the hunt field following a hiatus of about 25 years.

Jan was a genuine horseman and a real gentleman. My best to all his family in your sorrow.
John Sanders

Condolence from Kathy and Brad Ellis on March 23rd, 2014 9:40 pm

The memorial celebration of Jan’s life today was perfect. So many memories shared by new and old hunt comrades . Jan was such an example to all of us of true horsemanship and such a fine gentleman who always shone a light on the proper form of hunting and riding. It was so uplifting to have his son David and his super mate Jane and their children their to join in Jan’s celebration of life. He would been so proud. Brad and Kathy

Condolence from Gordon Nichols on March 24th, 2014 9:52 am

I was very sorry to hear of Jan’s passing. My deepest sympathy to his family. Although I had not seen or spoken to Jan in many years, I remember him fondly. I began my (now 33 year) career at Dominion Securities in 1980. Within a few months I joined the Investment Management Group, where Jan was the senior portfolio manager. He helped me enormously in my very early career and gave me very sound advise, which I forunately followed my entire career. He was very patient and kind to me. I will always be grateful.

Condolence from Irene Lenney on March 24th, 2014 1:37 pm

Roger and I were saddened to hear that Jan is no longer with us. Jan gave me my start in the investment business at Merrill Lynch in 1963 and helped me break into the portfolio management field by hiring me at Dominion Securities’ Investment Management Group in 1980. I wasn’t the only young immigrant he mentored. Many will feel as I do, that he helped launch our careers. Heartfelt condolences to his family.
