Jim passed away at The Village of Sandalwood Park in Brampton on Sunday, October 25, 2020.  Jim was the beloved husband of Thelma (nee Scott) for 59 years and the dear father of Lynda Whitten (Dan), Scott (Colleen Lowry) and Jeff (Michele Snyder).  He was the proud and loving grandfather of Stephen, Katie, and Tyler Whitten; Alex, Emily and Lauren Cannon; Waylon and Jessie Cannon.  Great-Grampa to Liam and Bryce.  Jim was the brother of Zelma and Bert Appleby (both deceased) and Bob (deceased) and Shirley Cannon.  He will be fondly thought of by Calvin and Doug Scott, Connie Foote (nee Scott) and Wendy Ash (nee Scott), and will be remembered by the many nieces, nephews and cousins from the extended Cannon, Fleetham, and Scott families, as well as his friends and neighbours.

Jim was a life-long resident of Caledon East, the son of William Burrell Cannon and Mildred Fleetham.  He spent most of his working years with his brother Bob and nephew Rob in the operation of Burrell’s Freshmart in Caledon East where he established himself as the butcher.  When the store closed in 1991, Jim was far too active for retirement so took on the position of caretaker at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bolton where he remained for several years.  Jim was a dedicated member of the volunteer fire department at Station 303 for more than 50 years, serving for 39 years as District Chief.  In 1961 Jim took on the care of Caledon East Public Cemetery and took great pride in keeping it well tended.  He retired due to illness in 2013.

While raising their own family, Jim and Thelma acted as foster parents for several years with Peel County Children’s Aid.  They also welcomed a student from Sweden for a year, and an exchange student from Greenland for a visit.  In his younger years Jim was active in hockey, softball and lacrosse and was often called by his nick-name of “Squirrel”.  He also enjoyed annual deer hunting and smelt fishing trips.  Jim and Thelma’s favourite holiday pastime was camping, and in cooler weather enjoyed trips to Myrtle Beach and Florida, as well as several guided bus tours.  They took many road trips throughout Canada and the United States, as well as overseas tours in Portugal and Great Britain.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff at The Village of Sandalwood Park for their care and compassion given to Jim during his time in their home.

Due to Covid 19 restrictions, a private family service will be held at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213).

Interment Caledon East Public Cemetery.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society (www.alzheimer.ca).

So sorry to hear of Mr Cannon’s Passing. A lot of great memories fixing up his old camper. He would slide Scott and I our steaks for cheap from the butcher counter at Burrell’s for our camping trips
Swimming in the cannon pool was always a great time.
Mr Cannon always amazed us with his energy working at the cemetery, not many men can do that work. Scott was a close second though.
He was a big man in Caledon East everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him will miss him.
Rest in peace Mr. Cannon

Dear Thelma, Lynda, Scott & Jeff: Our condolences on the passing of your Dad. So many memories … of seeing him at the back of the store (the butcher’s apron scared me as a little kid!), as a neighbour whose house we could see from our kitchen table, a fellow fire-fighter and friend of Dad and a reassuring presence at the Caledon East Cemetery on those sad occasions when we needed him. I’d like to thank him for his lifetime commitment to making things better in Caledon East. We won’t see too many more like him. With sympathy, Diane & Anne Allengame

Condolence from J Dawn Moffatt-Ironside on October 28th, 2020 1:50 pm

Jim was a man of honour and commitment to his family and to his community. His smiling presence was a welcome mainstay for me for the 20 years I lived just north of Caledon East. Jim, Bob, and Madeline Norrie were such a team in their grocery store, and there were very few nights that I didnt stop in on my way home from work at the Town of Caledon office. My deepest condolences to his family and the entire community at this loss. He was a gem!

Condolence from Paul and June Proctor on October 28th, 2020 1:59 pm

Condolence from Rick Jones on October 28th, 2020 3:45 pm

Jim Cannon, with a laugh that was contagious a twinkle in his eye and a slap of a knee…that’s what I remember.

I have very fond memories of Jim at the store working in the back when my Mom worked at Burrell’s. And at the fire department too where I like my Dad work along side Jim and others for many years.

On behalf of my Dad and me, well will miss our Chief.

Condolence from Marnie Clark on October 28th, 2020 4:19 pm

He was a very kind man. I’ll never forget the day mom (Jill McNichol) and I went to the cemetery to visit my mom’s mom’s grave and also to discuss whether or not my mom wanted to be laid there when the time came. As we were walking around the grounds, it became difficult for my mom to walk and as it was a long way back to my car, Jim offered up his big white truck for us to get in and drive back to my car. My mom couldn’t get up into the truck easily (being so tiny), so Jim put his hand on her backside and boosted her into the truck. We had a good laugh over that! Then Jim handed me the keys! I thought he would drive but he said I could take it. So there we were, mom and I, driving through the cemetery in the biggest truck I’d ever driven in my life! It is a memory I will cherish. Rest in peace Jim. My condolences to the Cannon family.

Our sincere condolences to your family on Jim”s passing.Jim was the type of man that makes small towns special. He carried on the strong Cannon family tradition of service to their community. One special memory I have dates back to the sixties;we were playing the despised bolton team for the league championship and we were in sudden death in the final game. The bolton player got a breakway and Jim wearing his ever present toque stopped him.We went on to win the championship>I think half of Caledon East were in the stands that night!

To my dear sister Thelma and my niece Lynda, and nephews Scott and Jeff. I loved Jim very much. He made my childhood fun and filled with laughter. He came off as the innocent one but could be the leader when it came to playing practical jokes on people. He was always ready to give me big hugs. I could not have had a better brother in-law if I had hand picked him myself. Rest in peace Jim and I will see you again some day.
