Peacefully, at Rouge Valley Centenary Hospital, Scarborough on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, James Alfred Cathcart, Oshawa, formerly of Caledon East, at the age of 86 years, dear husband of Jean for over 61 years. Much loved father of Trudy, Janice, Karen and her husband Bernard, Glenda and her husband Douglas; cherished grandfather of Sean, Anders and Mariko, Angus, Clare, Rachael, Connor and Benjamin and great-grandfather of Cullam. Ever active in the community, Jim served on the Brampton Hospital Board, Town Council and was a charter member of the Bramalea Rotary Club. He was initiated into masonry in 1975 as a member of Peel Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 468, Caledon East, and was Worshipful Master in 1985, was appointed Grand Steward, Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario in 1988, a life member of Heritage Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 730, Cambridge, a charter member of Chinguacousy Lodge A.F. & A. M. No. 838, Brampton, and was a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason. Jim joined the Royal Ulster Constabulary in 1947 and emigrated to Canada 1953. Later, Jim developed his insurance, then real estate businesses and was Ontario Real Estate Board President in 1988.
The family will receive their friends at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) Tuesday afternoon 2 – 4 and evening 7 – 9 o’clock. Memorial service will be held in the chapel on Wednesday morning, February 29 at 11 o’clock. Masonic service will be held Tuesday evening at 8:30 o’clock.
As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario.

The world has lost a true Gentleman and gentle man. You have lost a life long friend. We will be remembering and missing Jim at our Past Presidents Dinner on Tuesday night.

We are very sad to loose a dear uncle and friend. We will miss the Emails and phone calls but have many lovely memories of times spent with you in Ireland and in Canada in 2007. Love to you all.
Deepest sympathy from all here in Belfast, N.Ireland. Uncle Jim was remembered especially yesterday as we reminisced with Mum (Della) about all the precious memories he leaves behind. His regular visits to Fermanagh will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time.

I have known Jim for many years, first as a parent of Janice whom I taught in 1963 and later as a Masonic Brother. Jim was a great family man and friend. He will be missed by family, friends and Masonic Brothers.

I’m not sure that we have met however please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your husband & father. It was a pleasure and a priveledge to have known Jim as a fellow mason and member of Peel Lodge 468. He was one of several older members who welcomed me warmly when I joined in 2003. I will miss his interested, kind, and gentlemanly ways. I hope that your memories of Jim will bring you comfort in the time to come.

We were greatly saddened to hear of Uncle Jim’s death and extend our condolences and deepest sympathy to Auntie Jean and all the family circle at this sad time. We remember fondly Jim’s distinguished appearance, his warm broad smile and his gentle manner – wonderful attributes that would have won great respect from anyone who had the privilege of knowing him. We never made it over to visit Uncle Jim, Auntie Jean and family in Canada, but we have precious memories of their many visits back to Ireland.

I had the great pleasure of knowing Jim from his work with the Ontario Real Estate Association. Each year I looked forward to speaking with Jim at the conference. A true gentleman.
