Condolence from Sheila Paradi on May 10th, 2023 8:43 pm

Your Dad & Grandpa has fondly been mentioned for years around the Stewart family table. A Macville reunion had to include a huge welcoming hug from Mr. Maguire, a genuine conversation of him wanting to hear how all the family was doing, as well as a few of his own family updates shared with pride and joy for each of you. Mr. Maguire’s ability to lead with wisdom and ensure a caring school environment filled with respect will always be remembered with immense thanks and gratitude. May you experience comfort in hearing the many stories of how your Mom & Dad will always be dearly remembered.

Condolence from Andrea Krieger Gormick on May 10th, 2023 8:58 pm

I met Hugh at Lakeshore Teachers’ College in 1959-60. My first 2 years of teaching were in Herb Campbell Public School where Hugh was Vice-Principal. Later, 2 of my own children attended Macville Public School where Hugh was Principal. I knew Marietta and recall how excited they were to welcome Lee Ann.
Sincere sympathy to all of the family.

Condolence from Pete Nojd on May 10th, 2023 10:28 pm

I’m sad to learn of the passing of this wonderful man. Hugh Maguire has had a massive impact on my life. He was a great example as one who cared for those on the margins be it due to age, disability, or in my case, a kid venturing down the wrong road. I often tell people the story of how Mr. Maguire came to see me when I was totally lost, and how he turned my head and heart towards the Lord. His actions and his words have tuned my heart towards Christ-like thinking and Christ-like living. You will be missed. Thank you for caring about me.

Condolence from Dave & Liz Sanders on May 10th, 2023 10:34 pm

Dave & I send our deepest condolences to Steve and his sisters, LeeAnn & Cherie and the rest of the Maguire family. Knew Hugh when I was a secretary with the Peel Board of Education and then was reacquainted with him and the family when we met Steve quite a few years ago. Hugh was a very kind man and was highly thought of. He will be missed by many. May the fond memories you have console you during this time of grief. Much love to all.

Condolence from Bob and Janet Stockwell on May 11th, 2023 7:48 am

Mr. Maguire, as we always referred to him, was a great inspiration to our entire family through the years that our daughters attended Macville Public School and he was the principal there. He made Macville the excellent school that it was during his years there. After that time, we loved to see him at church on a regular basis along with his wife, Marietta, and occasionally at local restaurants where we would pause for a chat. Hugh was a warm, friendly, wise gentleman and truly a loving example of the way to live a good life. He is one of only two or three people who have made such an impression on me throughout my life. He had a wonderful memory for everyone and made people feel as if they really mattered to him. What a privilege to know him.

A more welcoming friendly outgoing person I don’t recall ever meeting than Hugh. When we knew hardly anyone in the crowd, Hugh would come over and give a big hug and say ‘hello! glad you’re here!’ His genuine interest in people was really evident and his love for the Lord clear. What a shining example he was of a godly leader. Will be missed and his memory cherished by so many.

Condolence from Grace Roorda on May 11th, 2023 9:29 pm

We were so shocked and saddened by this news of your dad’s passing. Over the years we have lost track of him and your late mom. They were always such an awesome couple and so encouraging to both Wayne and I. We always wondered how they were doing but we were so far away that it seemed too difficult to find the time for a visit. Now it’s too late and we regret that. When we worked for your parents it was always a joy. I think sometimes Wayne spent more time talking with your dad than actually doing anything. We will always remember their love for the Lord and how they always let that shine through every day. Our sincere condolences. May God grant you His peace as you go through this difficult journey.

Condolence from Stuart. Silvester on May 12th, 2023 6:12 am

Hugh was as large as life. He lived life to the full in every facet of his long and fruitful life.

I first met him when he was a teenager at Shelburne High School and through hockey. I well remember the night a bus load of Young people went to the Billy Graham Crusade in Toronto,
and we had to wait as Hugh had gone forward to give his life to Christ. From that day on his
Faith was visible and vibrant. I was excited when he married my cousin Marietta. They raised
three fine children and we enjoyed family reunions at their lovely home. my wife Bev was his
Librarian at Macville. Hugh will be missed but never forgotten. We’ll see you soon my friend.
Stuart Silvester.

Condolence from Jocelyn Baynes on May 12th, 2023 11:41 am

I remember Mr. McGuire fondly from when he was principal at Macville School. He ran things there with a firm hand but always with courage, grace and dignity and was a friend to everyone, staff, parents and pupils. Macville School was an environment that every parent and child I knew enjoyed their time in and I have fond memories of the many events when my children, David and Michael Cox attended school there.
My sincere condolences to his family at this time.

Condolence from Caroll Carter on May 12th, 2023 12:56 pm

LeeAnn and all of the Maguire family should know that to my family, and so many others, your parents were a devoted and dynamic couple. Moreover, your Dad set , met and raised the standards of excellence, not only as a human being, but as a principal. He truly cared about his staff and students and succeeded in creating a wonderfully supportive environment for all. I have fond memories of him meeting the buses, greeting the students, dropping down to eye level for the younger ones, and getting to know them all. …and of course, the all encompassing hugs of encouragement. It was a pleasure and a privilege to know him. The world has lost and the Heavens have gained a prince . My deepest condolences to the family.

I am so sorry for your loss!!
I had Mr. Maguire as a teacher at Herb Campbell PS back in about 1960. He was an excellent teacher and I still tell the stories of how he welcomed every student by describing our class as our own United Nations. Every one of his students was valued by him. There was never a dull moment… Many years later I wrote the music textbooks which are now used in high schools throughout the United States and Canada. it is so sad to hear of his passing….

Condolence from John Williams on May 24th, 2023 10:13 pm

What an honour to work with such a caring and godly man! I was privileged to cal him ‘boss’ at Calvary Christian School and learned so much every day just watching him interact with people. He was our princi’pal’ (after he had already retired from the public board) and truly showed God’s love to everyone. He was so passionate about his ministry at the seniors’ homes he visited weekly and led so many to the Lord in their final years…and in some cases days on this earth.

A life well lived!

My prayer is for God’s comforting hand to be with his family during this difficult time.

Condolence from Shari-Lou on May 27th, 2023 11:23 pm

Dear Maguire Family,
Upon reading the Caledon Citizen tonight learned that Mr. Maguire has gone to Glory. Just last year I drove north on Bramalea Road (Andrew’s) to the house I remembered and tried to find if and where they lived but to no avail. Mr. Maguire was my first principal at Macville Public School in 1971-72. I learned so much from him that one year. He would come into the classroom regularly, walk around as the Grade Three students worked at their desks or he would call them to sit with him at the back and listen to them read. The students of the school put their names into a container and on Friday he pulled a name and took that child out for lunch and a chat. Hugh ate his bagged lunch but bought the child a lunch. Years later I met him at the Speirs Apple Store and he told me he prayed for me every time he drove past my lane. In all the years since I never had a principal like him.

Condolence from Paul Revell on May 28th, 2023 1:59 pm

I am so sorry to hear of Hugh’s passing. When I first arrived as a neighbour, he and Marietta entertained me at the cottage and gazebo and told me about the history of our properties. He gave me advice on gardens and lawns, creeks, water, pools, upbringing kids, and all kinds of useful tid bits of information about life. I was given a special rooster: a very cute little hand-carved (by him), painted and on a little wood disk with a little plant in front. It is still in my kitchen as a fond memory of our friendship. He was only about 10 years older than me, so he had experienced some of my challenges to some. Also, as a teacher (like my brother) and later principal, he was patient with me and loved to talk and share his wisdom. One of his favourite things was to get out of the house and cut grass with his John Deere tractor. I am reminded of the old television sitcom “Green Acres”. So sad – he will be missed. LeeAnn, Steven and Cherie take care.

Condolence from Ruth (Honsberger) Taylor on May 30th, 2023 9:56 pm

I came to Macville in 1970 I think, as the teacher for the first special education class in northern Peel. Mr Maguire was so encouraging and supportive. In my second week in the class one of the students ran out of the class and through the nearby woods. I wondered about the choice I had made. Mr. Maguire got in his car and met the student at the other side and brought him back. The young lad remarked, “That was scary.” One time he and your mom hosted a staff party at their house. Your dad dove down to retrieve a fellow teacher’s engagement ring. During the 5 years I was at Macville I was married and received a wedding gift from your parents. The last time I saw him was at the Macville reunion. I have fond memories of your dad.
