Jim and I will always remember Gus with great affection. When we purchased the horse that we would name Highland Ruckus from his consignment at the September yearling sales back in the late eighties he was so excited for us. His enthusiasm never abated as he would come and watch his every race. 5 wins in a row as a two year old and no one cheered him on louder than Gus. Always a gentleman, always a big smile on his face. So sorry for your loss.

Condolence from Bob Storey on June 19th, 2019 6:07 pm

Some of us are lucky enough to meet special people, who leave an everlasting impression of strength, old fashioned core values and love of family. Gus was one such person, who I have know since 1986.
His love of horses was not just a hobby, but was a way of life. He cherished his family and never forgot from where he came. He was direct, non wavering, loyal, a man of great passion with a zest for life – and not afraid to take a position that ran contrary to what was considered politically correct.
I loved when he took your hand, looked you squarely in the eye and shared his thoughts, bits of history and personal experiences.
What a man! I will miss you Gus.

Dear Ann, Lisa, Susi, Tina and Heidi,
I was so sorry to hear of Gus’s and would be great role models for future generations. recent death. Even though I never met him, I felt his positive influence in his girls.
Ann, mum so enjoyed her visits to the Royal Winter Fair with you and Gus, partially because she was so fond of horses, but mainly because she loved your company.
I felt very fortunate to have had the opportunity of working with three of you at TSS, knowing that whatever you did, you’d do it well. I’m sure Gus was very proud of his family and delighted to be a great grandfather.
Fortunately you’ll all have great memories to share that will help you get through this difficult time.
Please extend my sympathy to the rest of your family.

I had the pleasure of working for Gustav for over 25 years. In that time a can truly say that my association with Gus and Schickedanz Brothers truly changed my life for the better. I believe someone has to be extremely fortunate to have had such a wonderful association over such a long period of time. I could not possibly be more thankful. I was in Ottawa this week and only heard of Gus’s passing Thursday afternoon. It saddened me immensely. I was only comforted by reminiscing about the rich experiences we shared thanks to Gus.
I offer my sincere condolences to Mrs. Ann Schickedanz, Lisa, Susi, Tina and Heidi and your families.

Condolence from Karin L Winegar on July 21st, 2021 5:04 pm

I had the distinct honor to be commissioned to write Gus Schickedanz’s private biography. We called it “Never Stop Dreaming,” because he never stopped. Never. In the many months of work together with Ann that it took to cover such a life, I was inspired, educated, entertained and occasionally (while hunting with him on his beloved Trakehners) thrilled. His stalwart attitude, his vigor, his generosity, his grasp of horses of all kinds, his memories of Germany, his anecdotes about the many good times with his ever-expanding family were just part of Gus’s rich character. He was not just my client, I like to think we became friends. What a marvelous role model of a human being rising out of war-torn Europe to a success beyond measure. I miss him often and often, including today when, three years after his passing, I discover this record of condolences.
