Glenn William Atkinson, in his 88th year, passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2017, after a brief hospital stay at Mackenzie Health Care Centre, Richmond Hill, beloved husband for 66 years of Velma Hawman. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Cherished father of Carol Chapman, Lois and Hans Grieger, Barbara Atkinson and David Loader, Glenna Atkinson and Dom Buttazzoni, Kenneth and Brenda Atkinson, Wendy Atkinson and Mark Pugh, Sandra Atkinson and Ed Bertola. Proud grandfather of David and Lauren Chapman; Ryan, Amelia, and Evan Grieger; Alexandra, Marshall, and Bretton Loader; Michael and Adrian Buttazzoni; Jennifer, Heather, and Bethany Atkinson; Robyn and Casey Pugh; Sebastian, Alexander, Pietra, and Mirella Bertola and four great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Ross (deceased) and Frances Atkinson, North Bay. Glenn was born in Simcoe County and moved to his dairy farm home on Hwy. 27 in King Township, at the age of 2. His love of animal husbandry and his commitment to the dairy farming industry was evident through his many leadership roles with the Holstein Club, Gencor (United Breeders), 4-H Club, and cattle judging. For many years, Glenn was an avid curler and hockey enthusiast, but the love of his large and growing family kept his heart full.

The family will receive their friends at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) Sunday afternoon 1 – 4 o’clock and on Monday, May 29 from one o’clock until time of funeral service in the chapel at 2 o’clock.

Condolence from John Morin on May 26th, 2017 5:49 pm

During my first 4 years of working full time in Nobleton I had the good fortune to meet Glenn and his Family. Immediately they all felt like Family and I enjoyed years of curling with Glenn and seeing him during his visits to his Mom’s house. Glenn even took me to the Alliston Hospital during an illness and have never forgotten how lucky I was for him to do that, being a Farmer I know their time is at a premium. My condolences to all the Family, Glenn made a lasting impression on me to try and follow his example.

Condolence from Derrek Wenisch on May 26th, 2017 6:47 pm

Condolences to the entire family, my prayers are with you all.
Glenn was such an easy guy to care about and love. His dedication to his family, work ethic and humor made him an absolute pleasure to be around. Even when things weren’t going his way, I rarly heard him complain. He always tried to make the best out of any situation, typically by making a quick but clever joke or comment. He had a sharpness about him that never faded with time. Regularly I would see a room of people pause from conversation when he spoke as if all knew what was about to be said would make them smile and laugh. I am lucky to have had him in my life and will always remember the promise I made to him. He will always be missed, but never forgotten. Glenn, may the cows in heaven be full of the richest, creamiest milk, and I will meet you someday for a glass once again.

Condolence from John Pitkin on May 27th, 2017 8:11 pm

Glenn drove the bus I rode everyday to KCSS for five years (1970-1975) and taught me a lot about how to treat people. Glenn knew all the kids names , very seldom missed a day and was always on time; even in the winter when the driving could be challenging. Kid’s behaved on Glenn’s bus and Glenn’s chivalry ensured that boarding was orderly and the girls were always first. I often sat up front and had many terrific conversations with Glenn.

I was doubly lucky as I went to school with Barb, Glenna and Lois and they were all reflections of Glenn; good friends who always had a smile and time to have a laugh with you.

Part of Glenn lives within me and I treasure the strong memories of all his good qualities.

My condolences to the Atkinson family as well as my heartfelt thanks for being part of Glenn’s world. He made a positive difference in a lot of people’s lives.

Thanks

John

Deepest sympathies. There was always a twinkle in his smile. Another example of Glen going “out of his way” occurred when Glen, as a school bus driver, variety his route to pick up our daughter Kate at the end of our driveway when she was on crutches with a broken ankle. (probably against company policy) We were curling buddies too.
