Hi Lois, Doug (& family – but you’re the ones I grew up with),

I can’t tell you how shocked &, really, devastated at the news of Gerald’s death: He’s ALWAYS been around for all our parties, weddings, events, &, YES, funerals; But more than that, he was always trying to get me to walk down the aisle in a white dress; (& LAST TIME i SAW HIM I TOLD HIM IT WOULD BE “OFF WHITE.”)

As well that I think you know Lois, how much I’ve always cared about & respected all of you, as much as I felt cared about & respected by you, I’m really sad, just because – I don’t even know if I should say this out loud at the moment, but – I never thought I’d never see that grin, happiness & confidence – it didn’t even occur to me – again.

I’m sorry because I don’t deal with these things very well: my father called me on Father’s Day & had to give me the news; I emailed my parents after, because, after all, you are their friends- although my mother pointed out I was sad as well – just to send them my sadness at their loss. You’ve both always been there – since before I was born – so know I respect & feel that bond.

Lois and family: it is with such sadness we feel the loss of Gerald-as we can tell from reading the many condolences, Gerald made a big influence on so many people, but not any more than our family. When Bob had a moment out of the field, he would think of calling Gerald, for an update, but Gerald almost always beat him to it, and the phone would ring.
Bob and our family respected and admired all that Gerald contributed to his life and we were so proud to be included in his circle of people.
Bob will forever be so grateful that Gerald, once again, beat him to the phone when he was in the hospital waiting for his surgery, and called for an update and a chat -it was about nothing in particular, but really it was about everything, and what it means to have spoken to Gerald at that time. There will always be that memory as well as so many memories of conversations and stories shared over many hours of conversation.
It was always wonderful to keep a close connection through Gerald to the memory of Armous and Kathleen and the days past. Our family is honoured to have shared in so many special occasions and conversations with this wonderful man, this family, this farmer.
We will miss him, and there will be a hole that can never be filled by the his absence.

Words can not express how deeply saddened we were to hear about Gerald. Only a couple of weeks ago he was in to see us. A short visit, but what laughter, it was always one up-man-ship, and who could have the last word. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

The corner of 50 and 7 will never be the same. Whom will I confide in. It’s been 56 years knowing this great legend as we always discussed everything together from our “million “dollar straw business to gardening, farming, weather, real estate and always jokingly how his head of cattle would enjoy being in the greenhouses and then I would put another tear in his fall coat. He would quickly stop me and then yet to return the following week with the same coat and my same tear.
Yes Gerald you have been one of my mentors and I will miss you very much.

I was so shocked to hear from my Mom, Shirley Lyons, that Gerald had recently passed. I pass your home and farm 2-3 times each week as I go to see my chiropractor in Woodbridge, from home in Brampton. I was only just telling my visiting Aunt that I had had a wonderful conversation with Gerald not that long ago.

It was, in fact, about 1 year ago now, but felt like much more recently. On my way home one evening I popped into the garden centre and the yard with all the clay objects across from you, Lois, to see what each had to offer. It was there that I ran into Gerald, over talking to the older couple who run the garden centre. I re-introduced myself to him and that led us into a 1/2-hour+ conversation about the past, and common people we know/knew.

As I’ve always found him to be Gerald was friendly, welcoming, full of laughter and caring. It was a wonderful exchange we had, and I will remember it every time I think of him. (Also, when my kids were very little my Dad arranged for Gerald to show them around the barn, see the kitties who lived in it, and introduce them to some of the cows who, I have a picture to prove it, gave kisses! A couple years ago, too, Gerald graciously let Mom park her vehicle at your home while she was away on a holiday and we had a chance to visit then, too… always pleasant and uplifting!)

Despite, and around, your deep grief and sudden loss may you realize the giant man–in personality and presence–your husband, father and grandfather was to so many. Thank-you for sharing him with those of us who were privileged to have rubbed shoulders with a man of great character.
