Peacefully at the Vera M. Davis Centre Nursing Home, Bolton on Sunday, January 4, 2015, after a seven year illness with dementia, Elinor Jane Essex, Tottenham, in her 94th year, beloved wife for 67 years of Alan Lancelot Essex. Loving mother of David and his wife Gail Essex, Mississauga; Karin Stinson, Yellowknife, North West Territories; Craig and his wife Debbie Essex, Nobleton. Cherished grandmother of Starr and Cory McLachlan, Yellowknife; Ella and Scott Wray, Yellowknife; Cleo and Will Scott, Yellowknife; Kevin and Melanie Essex, Etobicoke; Darryl and Sonia Essex, Whitby; Bailee and Pat Dumouchelle, Barrie; Walker Essex, Nobleton. Adored great-grandmother of Ula and Stig McLachlan, Yellowknife; and Brooklyn Essex, Whiby. Dear sister of the late Janet Wren, Marion Hadley, Isabelle Rescoral, Alison Hesketh, and James Suttie. Dear sister-in-law of Joan Yates and predeceased by Stella and Mabel.
Elinor was born in the west end of Toronto in 1921. She loved her sports. When Elinor was a teenager she played the position of back catcher in baseball for the Toronto Baseball League. She played the seasons playoffs at the Sunnyside Stadium. When the children were small, Elinor spent the summers at the cottage and the children lived in their bathing suits until bed time. When Elinor would blow a whistle and advise them and the neighbours children it was bed time. A neighbour called Elinor “The Warden”. When an empty nester, Elinor bowled twice a week in Bolton and joined a golf group, swim club and an art group. She enjoyed shuffle board in the spring and fall and curling in the winter.
Elinor’s family would like to send a huge thank you to all management, staff and volunteers at the Vera M. Davis Centre Nursing Home for their loving care of Elinor. Also for the kind and professional care and love from Barbara Holmes for Elinor’s last four years.
The family will receive their friends at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) Wednesday morning, January 7 from 10 o’clock until time of memorial service in the chapel at 11 o’clock.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Vera M. Davis Centre, 80 Allan Drive, Bolton L7E 1P7.

Very sorry to hear about Elinor who we all remember with such fondness and love. A great lady full of spunk and good humor. Our sympathies to Al, David, Karin and Craig and families. Thank you for your friendship over the many years.
Uncle Allan, I’m so sorry to hear of Aunt Elinor’s passing.
I have many fond memories…of childhood life at the beach.

Al, David, Karin and Craig I am so very saddened to read of Elinor’s passing and my thoughts and sincere sympathy are with you all and your families. I remember Elinor as strong, forthright, fair and always true to herself. I had great respect for her. I also remember her love of the cottage and the beach and how happy and contented she was there. My thoughts are with you all right now.

I received the news at noon today and I was very sorry that I missed the memorial service.
My brother Randy and I have fond memories of the hospitality of the entire Essex family at the cottage on Bluewater Beach and remember Elinor bringing order to the groups of children who were drawn to the love there.
“On behalf of the King and Neil families, we are sorrowed by the passing of Elinor who opened her doors and heart to our families.
Ricky and Randy King and Gary and Drew Neil all remember Elinor as a part of our families’ good times as they were growing up.
I remember Elinor and Al (Butch) as a wonderful couple. Like Colin and Elsie; they held a special bond that we all enjoyed and admired.
I wish I could have been more communicative on the phone call this morning but I do appreciate the call and the thoughtfulness. ”

We just learned of Elinor’s passing and are deeply sorrowed.
We sure had lots of fun bowling and I know you two were great friends of Mom and Dad. I think if I remember correctly Al, you and Dad traveled to Massey Harris together.

Dear Mr. Essex and family;
I am very sorry for the loss of Mrs. Essex. I did, so, enjoy visits with her when I have attended the home. Mr. and Mrs., both, so gracious, even in difficult health circumstances.
It is with extreme regret that I did not learn of her passing until two weeks afterward.
Undoubtedly, I would have attended the service and would have welcomed the opportunity to meet all of the family, about whom I’ve heard so much.
Thank you for sharing this message with Mr. Essex. I will see him, personally, soon.
