It is with sadness that the family of Doris Elaine (Wood) Ripley share news of her peaceful passing in her 87th year on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at the Gibson Retirement Residence, Toronto.   Born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Doris was the beloved wife of Robert Ripley for 63 years. Devoted mother of Wesley Ripley (Bev), Gordon Ripley (Sandy) and Robena Weiss (Joe). Cherished grandmother of Fiona (Kyle) and Stephen (Emily). Missed by great-grandchildren Jackson, James, Levi, and Luke and fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins. Dear sister of Ernest Wood (Wavey) and sister-in-law Shirley. She was predeceased by parents Russell and Nellie (Higgins) Wood and brother Darrell Wood.  Together with her husband Robert, they built their home in the Schomberg, Ontario area, and raised a family.  As the children grew older, she earned her certification and worked in General Accounting for many years.  She was always an active member in church and involved in Guiding since 1973 (long-service member of the Trefoil Guild).  Knitting and crochet work were always close at hand whether it was hats, mittens, socks or a sweater; given freely as gifts and earning many ribbons at area Agricultural Fairs.  Doris and Robert enjoyed square dancing, most recently active members of the Newmarket Happy Hoppers, and danced in parades and events across Canada and into the U.S.

Cremation has taken place.

A memorial service will be planned for a later date due to current Covid-19 circumstances.

Donations may be made in memory to:  Heart and Stroke Foundation, Women’s Centre of York Region, Teen Challenge, Girl Guides of Canada.

Doris was always kind to me. We are both with the York Trefoil Guild. She sent me birthday cards and encouraged me with my crochet and knitting projects. She was always willing to help me when I had a question in my pattern, or a problem I was having with my craft project. She also donated many knitted or crochet blankets for our Linus project. Blankets for children in hospital.

Condolence from Joan Dalziel on September 19th, 2020 11:54 am

Robert and Family: May it help you in your time of sadness to know I am thinking of you and share your sorrow. Doris and Robert, along with my late husband Bob were sidekicks as we shared in the executive positions of the Happy Hoppers Square Dance Club for over 20 years. Traveling and dancing all across Canada and part of the United States. Doris, was kind, loyal, quiet, somewhat reserved at times, but did voice her opinion. I am hoping that the love of friends will help to see you through this difficult time. With my love and deepest sympathy.

Condolence from Marion Lougheed on September 23rd, 2020 9:22 pm

I was sorry to hear of Doris’s passing. I knew Doris through Guiding and dancing at the Happy Hoppers. Doris offered many times over the last few years to knit hats for my Sparks and I’m sorry I didn’t take her up on it. She was a great teacher at dance…either offering up Rob or taking on the position of lead dance so that we’d have enough partners. Rob, my deepest condolences to you and the family.

Mr Ripley, Wesley, Gord, Robina and family
We were so sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs Ripley. You’ve been such wonderful neighbours all these years, there’s no memories of this road without you both on it. I loved seeing her every time we would go for a walk and waving and having chats at the front porch. Always see Mr. Ripley in the window watching television and waving. Every month getting our little booklets Our Daily Bread in the mail individually address to each one of us girls. It meant the world to us every time we would go to the mailbox and see them in their little plastic bag. Then you started making beautiful hats and mittens for the Christmas Drive your generosity was always so wonderful. We will miss you dear friend and miss our little chats and conversations are little booklets and just knowing that you were down the road always made the road seem happier. It won’t be the same without you here. We send our deepest sympathies and condolences to you Mr. Ripley and all the family sending all our love and our blessings in our prayers.
