Cecil John (Jack) Cannon passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, at Toronto East General Hospital, on August 26, 2015, at the age of 90. Predeceased by his wife Doris. I was a Toronto Police officer ( now retired ) & worked in Etobicoke. I knew Judge Cannon well as I testified in his court many times over the years. He was patient, kind and impartial. All who entered his court were treated respectfully . He was always cheerful & everybody liked Judge Cannon.

Condolence from Glenn Emond- Detective # 5780 (retired) on August 30th, 2015 1:32 pm

As a Toronto Police officer I appeared many times before Judge Cannon and he was always a true gentleman towards everyone who appeared in his Court regardless of what side of the fence you were on.

I will never forget his many recitals from the works of William Shakespeare as he sat on the Bench. Judge Cannon was famous for giving out sentences with unusual fines that always included the odd dollar and cents amounts. I remember one Christmas party he put on inside of courtroom # 205 when I was having a cocktail with him and got the nerve to inquire about what I thought was his weird fines that he imposed.

His response, “There are hundreds of people appearing in my Court and I can’t remember them all, but as soon as I look at their criminal record and see the fines I immediately know he’s been convicted by me before”.

It’s sad to read of his passing, but it’s nice to know he lived a long life in retirement.

I spent many hours before Judge Canon as a police officer. He did some and saidvsome strange things at times. As time went on I realized how in tune he was with events. We all knew he was very smart but there was much more to this man. You have left this world a better place. I always had a story to tell after being in his court. A Great man and one of a kind.

My sincere condolence on the passing of Judge Cannon. So many memories of him come flooding back his wonderful memorie for his historical dates which he would impress a whole courtroom when a trial date was mentioned. I also remember the wonderful meetings at Sid Roebucks house where Jack would regale us with political and judicial stories.

Condolence from William Horkins on September 3rd, 2015 9:36 am

He was a gentleman and a scholar.
As a young lawyer I had a “cause disturbance case”; young yahoos drinking and smashing bottles in a housing courtyard at 3 am!
Cannon J. commenced his judgement with this except from the poem Gray’s Elegy;
The curfew tolls the knell of parting day,
The lowing herd wind slowly o’er the lea,
The plowman homeward plods his weary way,
And leaves the world to darkness and to me.
… but there was no peace and tranquility for the good citizens at …

Condolence from Justice Lauren Marshall on September 3rd, 2015 11:01 am

I had the priviledge of appearing before Jack as counsel and then of sharing many memorable years with him as a member of the Ontario Court of Justice..

He was unfailingly polite, courteous and caring. He was hard-working and always ready and willing to assist his colleagues. My observations of his insights into human nature and understanding of the complexity of the human condition greatly assisted me in fulfilling my obligations as a Judge.

His memory was prolific, stemming he said from the country tradition of meetings and story-telling as a method of communuication and entertainment. He was an avid reader of obituaries and could provide geneoligical information of all and sundry. His kindness and generosity of time and energy were observed by everyone he came into contact with. His $98.25 fines were a hallmark of his recognizable sentences.
He was missed upon his retirement. He enjoyed his family and his travels in eastern Ontario and his lovely cottage in Colborne. His gentle spirit uplifted all around him. May the many happy memories of his life help sustain his family. He was unique. God bless him. Lauren Marshall

Condolence from Justice Frederick Forsyth on September 3rd, 2015 3:32 pm

Between 1973 and 1975 i was a freshly minted assistant Crown Attorney working in the Old City Hall. One of my assignments was a 6 week stint in the bail court in which Justice Cannon was presiding. During that 6 weeks i witnessed the sincerity and compassion and patience that he brought daily to people who were in most stressful circumstances. I was also amazed by his ability to accurately quote passages from Shakespeare that were both timely and also relevant to the particular factual situation with which we were confronted from time to time.
I am glad to learn that Justice Cannon lived many years after his retirement from the bench. He was indeed a great credit to our profession.

Condolence from Joe Bovard on September 7th, 2015 5:53 pm

I always thought that Judge Cannon was a fair and polite judge. It was a pleasure to appear before him when I was counsel. He was a true gentleman. My deepest condolences to his family.
