It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carlos C. Frewin, on November 19, 2022, at the age of 77, at Brampton Civic Hospital. He will be loved and cherished forever by his wife and best friend, Janice (Wojcik). Dear brother of Dennis (wife Janina), father of Gregg (wife Amanda) and Daniel, and, grandfather of Jack, Julia, Joel and Lucas. He is predeceased by his parents Dennis and Eleeta (Hagar) Frewin of Bobcaygeon, and will be fondly remembered by his niece Christine, nephew Dennis, friends and colleagues.

Carlos was a learning and development specialist, and an accomplished presenter, with extensive experience in business and education. He followed a lifetime interest in helping people learn and succeed in different learning environments. He received bachelor degrees from both the University of Western Ontario and University of Waterloo, a teaching certificate at the Ontario College of Education, and, a Master of Arts and a Doctorate in Education at the University of Toronto.

Carlos began his career in education as an Associate Professor at the University of Saskatchewan. He moved on to Confederation College in Thunder Bay where he led the development of one of the first distance education programs in the community college system in Ontario.

Moving into the private sector, Carlos held roles including Director of Training & Development at Motorola Information Systems, Director of Senior Management & Executive Development at Noranda Inc., and, Managing Partner at InLearn Inc.

Later in his career, Carlos returned to his first love of teaching and joined Humber College in 2003 to assist with curriculum development for the first degree program offered by Humber. As a professor, driven by his dedication to student success, he was a co-author of POWER Learning, Strategies for Success in Higher Education and Life (Third Canadian Edition).

Following his retirement from Humber, Carlos joined the Board of Directors of Caledon Meals on Wheels in 2013 and was instrumental in helping the organization successfully achieve Accreditation in 2016. He served as the long-time Chair of the Governance Quality and Risk Management Committee, and Board President from 2018-2020. In 2020 Carlos received a Town of Caledon Community & Social Services Recognition Award for his leadership and extraordinary contribution to Caledon Meals on Wheels and the Caledon community.

Carlos was a gifted person, a thought leader with keen insights into people and situations, with a laugh and presence that could fill a room. He loved sailing, exploring new places and over the years working on his sailboat or around the house. Most importantly he loved his wife Jan, his family and his dogs (golden retrievers Emma and current daily fur-companion Stella), and cared deeply for his friends and people he worked with. His grit and sense of humour helped him face numerous health issues over the past few years with courage and strength. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed a great deal.

Special thank you to the Complex Care Clinic at Peel Memorial Hospital and his team of specialists for their compassion and care.

The family will receive their friends at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) on Friday, December 2 from one o’clock until time of memorial service in the chapel at 2 o’clock.

In lieu of flowers, donations  to Caledon Meals on Wheels https://cmow.org/ or Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada https://www.heartandstroke.ca/ would be appreciated.

Condolence from Michael Kirk on November 25th, 2022 11:58 am

My heartfelt condolences to Jan and to Carlos’ extended family. Such a tremendous loss. Carlos was dedicated to helping people learn: not just his students, but also his colleagues. I benefited from his kindness, his willingness to share insights, and his experience as a teacher. When I first arrived at Humber, Carlos and I were officemates and Carlos was assigned as my mentor for orientation. How fortunate for me as Carlos had an acute sense of what was important for me to know, and what held little value for a new teacher.

Following his retirement (and mine), a few of us would meet occasionally for lunch with Carlos at the Mandarin restaurant. He would share what he was doing post-retirement, with his work with Meals on Wheels often mentioned. Of course, he was curious to know what everyone else was up to. I also think these lunches were a bit of a diet splurge for Carlos, as I don’t think many items on the menu were doctor recommended! I have very fond memories of these lunches.

For Jan and family, I hope that knowing how many people Carlos helped in a lifetime dedicated to learning will bring you comfort during this difficult time.

I am very sorry to hear that Carlos has passed away way too soon. I knew Carlos at Humber mainly through Jan as a friendly and interesting person who would brighten my day with his smile. Then I was privileged to work directly for Carlos in a teaching position. He cared about the students and about me and was always available to listen and give advice and support.

It was such a shock to learn of Carlos passing away. What a loss. My heart is breaking for you, Jan, and for all of his family and friends. Carlos was a kind and gentle man who gave freely of his knowledge, expertise, and experience. His students, colleagues, neighbours, and friends were lucky to learn from him. I truly hope that in time the memories of happier times will bring you much comfort, Jan. I know how much he loved you.

Condolence from Jan’s Co-op & Work Placement Team on November 28th, 2022 2:35 pm

Deepest condolences to Jan, family and the many friends you both acquired over the years. We had the good fortune to hear many Carlos happenings through Jan’s story telling. These tales can only be described as cute, funny, caring and inspiring. Through these stories we were able to learn about Carlos’ days and interest especially after retirement. His love and dedication to Jan, Stella, family and their lives together was so important to him . This was a man driven by passion, strength and determination to live life to its fullest, no matter what curves were thrown his way.

For those of us who remember Carlos coming into the office, ready to pick up Jan at the end of her day, we remember his smile, laugh and always showing an interest in what we were doing or how our day was going. Truly a man with a warmth and kindness that was felt with whomever he encountered. He will be missed by many, but none more than Jan. We trust knowing the strong and determined person you are will help you through this difficult time.

Our prayers are with you.

Condolence from Beverly Myers on December 1st, 2022 3:59 pm

Dear Jan,
I was incredibly sad to hear about the passing of Carlos.
Carlos and I first met when I started teaching in the SCM program at Humber 15 years ago. I was asked to teach a Project Management course in addition to the SCM courses I had been hired for. Carlos was the primary instructor on that particular course and he more than happily took me under his wing.
Being straight from industry, Carlos made sure I had all the content and was well prepared for my first semester of classes. More importantly, he shared his experiences and teaching stories (both good and bad) with me so I could put my best foot forward and be better able to support the students on their educational journey. His guidance in that first semester certainly had a positive influence on my time in the classroom.
Please know I am thinking about you during what must be a difficult time for you and your family. Carlos always had a unique perspective on things and his laugh and jovial personality will certainly be missed. May you take comfort in all the wonderful memories you and Carlos have created together over the years.
With deepest sympathy,
Beverly

The warmest and most gentlemanly scholar I ever had the priviledge to work with and learn from. He was truly an inspiration to his students and fellow professors alike. He will be sadly missed but very fondly remembered for that smile, grace and warmth. I am truly blessed to have called him my friend.
