I have been blessed to have Betty in my life as a teacher at Caledon East Public School; as a dear friend (with Ginger) of my parents; amazing community organizer (Caledon East School Reunion) and perhaps most significantly, as part of the team responsible for The Caledon Trailway; building the dream, of which I played a part. My Mom, Anne, remembers as a newcomer to the village in the late 1950s meeting up with Betty to do a village clean up, and for the next 60 years or so Betty never stopped trying to make things better for people.

I wonder how many tickets she’s already sold in heaven…

It would be very difficult to find someone who volunteered as much time to various community endeavors as Betty did.

She had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.

She will be missed..

I was so sorry to hear of the loss of Betty. She was a wonderful lady and teacher. In the older days I babysat her children in Caledon East. In the younger days she tutored me in grade 7 and 8 math. She will be fondly
missed and I send my condolences to all the family. We remained friends for many years.

I’m so sorry to hear of Betty’s passing. She was a special lady! In my time working in Parks & Recreation for Town of Caledon, I found that she was a staunch friend of the Caledon Trailway. I credit her with sparking the idea for our wonderful book: The Caledon Trailway – Building the Dream.

As a newcomer to Caledon East in 1992, it was my pleasure to have Betty welcome me to the Caledon East Historical Society and to immediately involve me in the book on the history of Caledon East – Settling the Hills. I worked with Betty on three other books – The School on the Hill, Sharing Our Past- CE United Church celebration of 125 years, and most recently The Caledon Trailway. I spent many years with Betty on the historical society and in many other endeaveours. Betty was a ‘mover and a shaker’ – inspired people to great accomplishments in her village, her church and her family. All that, and Betty was a true friend, a wonderful woman whom I can say has enriched my life.

Chuck and I extend our well wishes to the Ward family and know that you will miss this wonderful woman, but also know that you are so privileged to have had her in your life.

I did not have the pleasure of knowing Betty for many years, as many people have, but I heard a lot about her while I was employed at the Town of Caledon. When I finally met her, when I started attending Caledon East United Church, she made me feel like I had known her all my life, and she made me feel so welcome. She was so warm and friendly and as time went on I realized what this lady had accomplished for her church and her community. She “recommended” me to be the Secretary for the Book Committee for the Trailway history and again to be the Secretary of the UCW. Nobody could ever say NO to Betty, whether she was asking you to do something or to buy a ticket. I will truly miss her. She was a wonderful friend and enjoyed a great life. Condolences to the family on their loss.

My sincere condolences at this sad time.

Betty! My friend, my UCW sister, my mentor, my idol….the best of the best. The best hugs in the world when she would almost strangle you, laughing, loving. You knew you were loved. She encouraged me on a new venture in my life that of leadership in the United Church Women, shortly after my beloved had passed away, “opening a new door” for me. She was the greatest traveling companion with our two other “sisters”, the “aunties” to my girls, traveling to UCW Anniversary Celebrations across the country, the last on that three night train ride to Vancouver. The list goes on, but most of all, Betty was Love. Thank you, her children, for sharing her with me. Hugs!

I got to know Betty when she was our liaison along with Rev. Warren Ball , in the search for a new minister . She was so knowledgeable about all the rules and regulations we had to follow . Since that time I have had the pleasure of many wonderful conversations and cups of tea .
I hall miss her smile and great talks.

Betty’s smile and laughter was infectious. God had a plan for my relationship with this lovely lady, when we met at Bolton Continuation School—Grade nine– and in Junior farmers, in our teens.
Later, when her brother came to live with us on the farm, for seventeen years, that relationship was renewed. Many years later,again, by coincidence only, retirement brought us together in Caledon East United Church, where Betty was a wonderful influence on everyone.
Little did we know that , years later, living together at Montgomery Village in Orangeville, where Betty`s constant smile and enthusiasm was always there to brighten each day.
We want to express our love and sympathy to all her family and say how much she has meant in our lives,.

A very sweet lady. I always enjoyed her company and talking with her at Caledon East United Church while having a coffee. She sold me on the Caledon Trailway book which I was glad to purchase from her. A lot of fond memories. She always was a kind, charming, caring and intelligent person.

Betty was like a second mother to me growing up. Both her and my mom (Mildred Gillespie) were teachers but at home raising their children. They would take turns babysitting for each other when they got an early morning supply teaching job! My dad also hired her as a teacher at the old school on the hill when he was principal there before she had children. Great memories of Betty, she was always such a go-getter! She was a sweet lady then and been that way ever since. We were together on several occasions for interviews or dinners with friends in Toronto. It always felt good to be around Betty, she just sparkled. Full of joy, laughter and compassion, she was a wonderfully positive soul. I got to know her through her love of local history and her keen interest in sharing that knowledge. So many fascinating and hilarious stories told over lunch around her kitchen table, so much energy put into helping others and her community. It was an honour and a delight to have been her friend. A wonderful life well lived.

Sorry to hear that Betty passed away, I first met Betty over sixty years ago when she and Ginger were married. She was the nicest person one could hope to meet.

Our condolences to the family . Betty was a wonder woman . When something needed doing you could alway count on Betty and when you needed to do something she gave you the confidence to get it done. So sad that she is gone.

Such a beautiful Lady and such a life well lived. I met Betty through Caledon Meals on Wheels when I was first a volunteer and then after I became the Executive Director. Caledon Meals on Wheels would not be the great organization it is today without the amazing group of volunteers from Caledon East and mostly from Caledon East United Church – the Wards, the Gillespies, the Innis’s, the two Proctor Familes, Russell Noble and so many more. This group of volunteers didn’t just deliver meals, they truly cared about their neighbours and friends living in their community. I was just looking at a little sign that Betty and Jean Proctor gave to me when I moved away from Caledon some years ago – it reads “Bless this house with Love and Laughter” – I was also blessed to have her friendship, she touched my life. My sincere condolences to all her family.

Back when I worked for the Town of Caledon and we had just acquired the abandoned rail line from CN Betty came to see me about getting a bench where the old train station used to be in Caledon East. She wanted a place to rest before walking up the hill. That was the beginning of the Station Lands Parks idea and sparked the creation of several parks on the old station lands in places like Caledon East, Palgrave and Inglewoid. Betty sparked many great ideas that became realities. She was a special person.

Mrs. Betty Ward was a very nice woman who raised three fine children . Mrs. Ward was devout Christian who attended the Caledon East United Church and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. I trust Betty will be one of the few that join with Christ in Heaven for ever and ever

Betty Ward was a fine woman and a good Christian . No worries about where she is headed in the next phase of the human existence .

George and Betty’s husband Ginger went to school together in Caledon East. We’ve known Betty for over 70 years. She has been kind and considerate to those she met and she also had a good sense of humour. Our sincere condolences to the Ward family. Betty will be missed.

She was someone who encouraged the best from you. We have all lost that one person who strived to make our village “home”! She always had an idea for something new and would run it past me with “what do you think” She created the “UCW 40th Anniversary Award”. Supporting student ministers from Emmanuel College. 58 students have received at least $1,000. for their studies and it continues. I will miss my travelling companion. As a child I always loved going to my cousin’s place in Caledon East.
The little dead-end street, the beautiful white bungalow, lovely flower and vegetable gardens.
Aunt Betty who was always so welcoming and Uncle Ginger with the most fabulous basement I had ever seen, a woodshop in the basement!!
I was so envious of my cousins, for years I would ask my Dad, why do we not have a woodshop in the basement like Kent, Lynn and Paul!!
Uncle Ginger and Aunt Betty will always hold a special place in our hearts.

We were so privileged to have known Betty. She helped guide Gary through his early years of teaching at Caledon East. As a supply teacher, she met and taught our daughter, Allison.
We met her at many events throughout the years, Meals on Wheels, Theatre Orangeville, craft sales, dinners etc. She always had a smile on her face and a welcoming hug when we met and was so interested in what family and friends were up to. Her kindness and welcoming presence will be sorely missed by everyone she met in the community.

We’re very sorry for your loss…It was always so nice to chat with her at church and during the many suppers and/or events we attended.

What an inspiration she was!!!! I worked with Betty, laughed with her, talked family with her and was so privileged to be at so many events with her, UCW and other when I was President of Toronto Conference and beyond. Dear Ward Family,
My sincere condolences upon the death of your dear Betty!

As a clergy colleague of Kent, and member of Dufferin-Peel Presbytery for many years, I have fond memories of Betty serving , singing, laughing, her many shenanigans, her faithfulness to her family, her church, her faith community, her UCW sisters, the community she loved so dearly!

I give God thanks for Betty… for her full life… her faithfulness… her leadership and love. I give thanks, for Betty, any/all earthly pain is ended and she is is at peace in the Holy’s presence for eternity! I give thanks for her modeling and mentoring (and sometimes meddling) that was ALWAYS undergirded with her deep care, compassion and concern for others.

May the One who IS Love, God/Jesus who Betty professed and proclaimed, be a source of comfort and care at this tender time. And may you, her family, feel blessed and thankful for the gift that was… and is… and will continue to be Betty; whose love for you will never die.

I was heartbroken to hear of Betty’s passing and sadly found out too late to attend visitation or services. I was Betty’s Hairstylist in Caledon East for nearly 19 years. She was one of my favourite clients. Everyone knew Betty for her accomplishments, how she volunteered with the Church and the heritage community . She definitely was a pillar of the community. Betty was also a fabulous story teller and she always made me laugh! She would always find the bright side to any situation and sometimes would even loved to come in and share a bit of controversial information !!! lol. Sadly I lost touch with Betty when she moved to Orangeville, then Covid Virus hit us all. Something I regret greatly. I pray Betty is at Peace and is with her Beloved Handsome & Witty Ginger once again.
I miss you Betty. One day we will have a good chat & laugh again.

I came to first know Betty when she was a supply teacher in my classroom at Palgrave. She made such a lasting impression as she instantly made me feel like her friend. Later I was so excited to see Betty at UCW church gatherings and it was like no time had passed. I saw at such gatherings how just Betty’s presence in a room instantly brightened the whole atmosphere. Betty will be so dearly remembered. My sincere condolences to Betty’s family.
