In Loving Memory of Betty Dodemont

Betty passed away peacefully at Tall Pines Long Term Care Home, on Thursday, October 15, 2026 at the age of 91, Leaving behind a lifetime of love, cherished memories and a family who will miss her dearly.

Born on April 5, 1935, in Tilburg, Holland, Betty grew up surrounded by her large family and friends, and all the joy that brought with it. She was a member of her local swimming team and the family bakery bicycle delivery girl. In 1952, at the age of 16, Betty moved with her family to Canada but always saved her money with plans to move back to Holland. That is, until she met Gerry, who similarly moved from Germany, always with plans to go back. They married on April 27, 1957, in North Bay, and instead of returning home, chose to put down roots in Canada. After buying a parcel of land on Ski Jump Road, they built their first home where they welcomed their daughters into the world. Their journey later brought them to Toronto, and then to Caledon, where Gerry built another home that continued to fill with love and memories, raising their daughters and then welcoming and loving their granddaughters. In their later years, Betty and Gerry moved to a condo overlooking the Humber River, and where Gerry spent the rest of his days. Betty then moved into Tall Pines, where she was surrounded by exceptional care, and by family and friends, especially on holidays, just like she loved to do in her home.

Betty will be deeply missed and forever remembered as the loving mother of Brenda and Joyce, as well as mother-in-law of Joyce’s late husband Kirk. Her daughters will always carry with them the memory of their mother’s beautiful smile, her gentle nature, and the unconditional love and kindness she brought into their lives. They feel so very fortunate to have had her as their mom.

Her greatest joy was being Oma to her adored grandchildren, Rachelle, Carly, Katrina and Julia. She loved them with all her heart, surrounding them with warmth, affection and unwavering support. They will always remember her big hugs, cooking their favourite meals at a simple request, the unconditional love she showed them and her keen eye for fashion. Betty made sure to make each of them feel treasured and deeply loved, creating memories they will carry in their hearts for the rest of their lives.

Betty was the dear sister of Tony and his late wife, Agnes, and of her late sister Mary and her late husband, Bert. Loving aunt to Bernie, John, Celia, Cheryl and Cori, and to Marion only on paper. Marion was in many ways another daughter to Betty, as well as a sister to Brenda and Joyce. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Marion for the love, care and support she gave Betty throughout her life.

The family also wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Tall Pines for the exceptional care, compassion and kindness they showed Betty during her time there. Their warmth and support are deeply appreciated.

Betty and Gerry shared a love of Travel, Gardening and cooking, but above all else, they shared a deep love of family. Their home was the heart of their lives, a place where family and friends were always welcome and where love was felt in the simplest, most meaningful ways. Betty’s greatest happiness was always found in having the people she loved gathered around her. Her family was her world, and she had a beautiful way of making everyone feel like they belonged. She had a special ability to always make a house feel like home, always welcoming and filled with so much love. Handpicked flowers fresh from her overflowing garden in a vase on the table, the smell of whatever was cooking spreading throughout every room, a fresh apple pie or lemon loaf next to a brewing pot of coffee, beautiful music softly playing in the background. A visit was always so much more than just that for her. It was an invitation to sit, share a story, connect and feel at home. No matter if planned or spontaneous, every arrival was greeted with the same care and genuine happiness.

Cooking was the way Betty loved, it went beyond just preparing a meal but was something far more heartfelt for her. Her kitchen was a place of comfort and safety, and gathering around her table was always a special pleasure. Through her cherished recipes, generosity and care she put into every dish, she created that wonderful feeling of ‘Gezellig’; the special joy of being together. These simple everyday moments imbued with such care became some of the family’s most precious memories, and her love will always be woven into them.

She made the world a better place simply by being in it. With her pure heart, gentle kindness, beautiful smile and joyful spirit, she touched the lives of all who knew her. Though we must now say goodbye, the love she gave us will never fade. It lives on in all the memories of her, in the way that love was shared with a warm hug, a familiar smile, the simple happiness of being together, in the family traditions she created and passed on, in the recipes that will continue to be shared and in the warmth we will strive to bring into our own homes and lives just as she did.

Betty will be missed more than words can express, loved beyond measure, and remembered always.
