Condolence from Dean and Tina Darrigan on January 27th, 2012 7:26 pm

Gertie, Nancy, Ray and family, We are so sorry to hear of the loss of Uncle Bert. We also feel very lucky that we were able to spend precious time with him, Uncle Jimmy, Uncle Verdon and Ellen at Ray and Nancy’s place a couple of weeks ago. That time we will always treasure.
I know many years ago before my father passed away, Bert was not only my father’s brother but his best friend. They spent alot of time together….I’m certain they are together again. (and probably up to no good over 30 years later!!)
Our thoughts and prayers are with you Nancy and family at this time. We will miss you Uncle Bert.

Condolence from Helen Darrigan & Richard Bell on January 29th, 2012 12:02 pm

Dear Gertie, Nancy & Family,

I was saddened to hear of Bert’s sudden passing, although I have been only too aware of the time we were given to be with him since his stroke 3+ years ago.

Bert was my first cousin; his father Clayton was my father’s (Uncle Stan) oldest brother. As a child, I always looked forward to Bert and Arthur coming to visit us from Ontario. It always included a fishing expedition and they’d arrive back at our house in Lark Harbour with their catch of salmon trout for my Mom (Aunt Susie) to fry up.

When Bert moved back to Newfoundland he spent a lot of time with my Dad and Mom, especially when they were both in the O’Connell Centre in their last years. After Dad passed, Mom was there for another 7 years and Bert would visit her regularly, and during her final days he would come every day. Once when we could not be in Newfoundland, he actually took the time on New Year’s Day to come and sit with her. My sister Joanne and I shall never forget his kindness.

He was a real gentle man and a gentleman always, and I shall miss our phone calls and visits. My heart goes out to all of you in your time of loss. Please accept Richard’s and my deepest condolences.

Cousin Helen

Condolence from Norm & Vicki Bailey on January 31st, 2012 7:30 pm

We were saddened to hear of Bert’s passing. I have great memories of our Fort McMurray days and the many good times. Bert was always cheerfully present in the kitchen on Friday nights when in his own words he would “turn the kitchen into a Greasy Spoon!” Even in our last visit to Newfoundland Bert was fixing a tasty Jiggs dinner for the family. He showed us his violin that he cherished as it brought back memories of his brother Art. We liked Bert’s tender care of my sister Gertie through the years and the way he fondly referred to her as “his little woman.”
We will miss you Bert and will keep your memory in our hearts alive. Rememberance is life’s last gift. Thank You Bert and our deep sympathy to the family.
