Roger Barbara Web

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Barbara Brown Roger (nee Paterson) on Sunday April 23, 2017. Loving mum of Mark (Janice) and Gaynor (Mike); treasured Gran of Rachel, Paul, Finnan and Leif; cherished friend of many; talented knitter; avid cross-border shopper; lover of travel; and passionate long time volunteer of Skate Canada – Central Ontario.

Barbara was always on the go from dawn to dusk, and lived life to the fullest. Strong, generous, loyal, compassionate, energetic and hard working, she had a smile for everyone and took great joy in each and every one of her friendships, near and far, old and new. Although born an only child in Glasgow, Scotland, Barbara passed away leaving an enormous wealth of friends who became part of her extended family, and who now miss her deeply.

We invite those whose lives Barbara has touched, to a memorial gathering to celebrate Barbara’s life at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S (Hwy 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) on Friday May 5, 2017 between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm.

Cremation will take place prior to Friday. If desired, memorial donations may be made to The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada in memory of Barbara and her lifelong love of bringing smiles to young faces. The following is a link to the charity:

I am sorry to hear of Barbara’s passing. I worked at Chrysler Canada in Windsor around 1964 when I first met Barbara, before she was married We worked together for some time before I left Chryslers. Since then we have been in touch mostly by Christmas Cards, and then by email and on facebook. My daughter still has the Barbie Doll clothes that Barbara knitted for in at that time. I will miss her emails and hearing about her skating events.

Was saddened deeply of the passing of such a wonderful Lady. Met Barbara when I was also a volunteer for Skate Canada. Barbara was always there with Grace and a huge big Heart ❤️ she loved everybody she met and will be missed. If I can say one thing about Barbara you never saw her without a huge smile and her eyes would say it all. We will miss her deeply.

When we consider the lives of people who Serve unselfishly, we can see Barbara. She gave every thing she had to others and enjoyed the pleasure it gave back to her in return. She cultivated an Attitude of Happiness and a Spirit of Optimism.

Gaynor, I met your mom when you skated in Richmond Hill, many years ago. She always had a ball of wool under her arm and was knitting a skating sweater for someone. Barb and I always spoke, each time we saw each other whether we were volunteering at an event or she was team leading or I was coaching. The last time we spoke was in Port Colborne at Skate Ontario Championships. I will always have fond memories of your Mother. She was a wonderful lady.

My heart and thoughts go out to you and your family. Your mom will be dearly missed by everyone.

Barb was always the go to person when you had a problem or needed some advise. The skaters loved her when she would take their jackets or guards at a competition. She always had a smile on her face. I will truly miss her advise and our long conversations about skating.

My daughter and I just saw Barb at Port Colborne, All Ontario’s. I can’t believe she won’t be at the next competition that we attend, with her winning smile and friendly encouragement.

Gold Bless.

Condolence from Margo Cooke on May 1st, 2017 2:45 pm

Barb was just an ageless type of gal. She made long hours enjoyable and fun for everyone! Barb was part of the fabulous group of skating fans that went to the Grand Prix Final in Barcelona in December 2014. I spent a lot of time with Barb on that trip and did we have a blast. Susanne, Clare, Barb and I covered lots of ground. Dipped our toes in the Mediterranean Sea, cable car up the mountain for drinks on the outdoor patio and real cappuccino in the the bustling downtown. But it was Barb whacking a pick pocket on the train with her purse that causes me to smile each time I think about it or talk about it. She made everyone smile and I believe that was her most valuable gift to all of us. While I will be unable to attend on Friday as I live in Windsor now, I will be thinking about her Friday and of course many times more!

Condolence from Stacy Farmer on May 1st, 2017 3:30 pm

So sorry to hear of Barb’s passing. I remember her well, always smiling during skating test days and competitions. Thanks for all you did Barb!

Condolence from Sheri Gilmour on May 1st, 2017 3:47 pm

To Barb’s family,

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you all at this sad time.

Barb touched the lives of our family in so many ways and so many times over the last 20+ years but I am fortunate to have been the recipient of her wonderful wisdom and guidance as we amalgamated the Brampton skating community. As we continued on she was always there with a smile, wonderful words of encouragement and her wonderfully optimistic attitude. She will be missed by more than you can know. She has touched the lives of thousands.

Sheri, Dave, JD and Katie Gilmour

Condolence from Ian Bissett on May 1st, 2017 4:49 pm

It was so sad to receive an e-mail from Gaynor informing our family of Barbaras death, and in particular the speed and timing. I think I’ve known Barbara for about 55 years, because she babysat my Brother, Sisters and myself when we lived in Johnstone Castle.
Barbara kept in touch with each of our family over the years, shared photos and Xmas cards, which she used to keep us up to speed with her exploits and travels with ice skating. During her UK visits Barbara always made a point of visiting Mum, who took great comfort in being remembered after all these years.
We will always have fond memories of a warm and caring family friend.
Ian Bissett, Pencaitland, Scotland.

Barb and her family lived across the road from my family. My brother Dan and I went to school with Jay nor and Mark. Bob and I are devastated to hear of the passing of Barb! We first worked with her on “Skate the Dream”, a fundraising for Aids in memory of Rob McCall. She has always been the ultimate volunteer – incredibly capable and effective, while always keeping in the background with her quiet demeanour. How sad to think we will not see her at events where her quiet presence always shone. We are so sorry to have to miss the celebration of her life as we will be away.

Gaynor – I haven’t seen your Mum in a while, but we always picked up where we left off. She always remembered my kids’ names, always asked after my brother and Mum, and always made me laugh with a sparkle in her eye.

Thank you Mrs. Roger for an unlimited supply of all the vital things you supplied in University (chocolate, chief among them), for opening up your home to a girl far away from hers, and most of all for raising up such a lovely daughter who will continue your legacy of community involvement and devotion to family.

XO Lisa
