McEwen Web

With sadness we say goodbye, far too early, to Andree J. McEwen (nee Corriveau) at Bethell Hospice, Inglewood, Ontario, on December 31st, 2025.  Andree suffered a brain disorder called Corticobasal Syndrome brought on by early onset Alzheimer’s.

She leaves behind her beloved husband of 38 years, William (Bill) McEwen.  Loving mother of Tyler ( Jill Van Harten) and Adam (Leanne McGilvery).  Proud grandmother of Max and Oliver.  Cherished sister of Brigitte (John Senese) and Steven Corriveau (Jennifer).   Dear aunt of Jeffrey, Ashly, Lucas and Brandon.  Fondly remembered by brothers-in-law Andy McEwen (Kim) and Doug McEwen.

Andree, the eldest of three children, was born on August 15, 1963 in Sherbrooke, Quebec to Germain and Paquerette (nee Darveau) Corriveau.  She lived in Springfield, Massachusetts for four years before moving to Fonthill, Ontario.  She graduated from McMaster University in Hamilton with Honours and began teaching in 1987.  Her career spanned 33 years, with 30 of those years teaching elementary French at Holy Family Catholic School in Bolton.  Known as “Madame McEwen”, Andree was loved by her students, always inspiring them to their full potential.

A great travel planner, Andree was always working on the next trip.  For 30 plus years she travelled to many distant and exotic places with family and friends, enhancing her love of studying history and museum artifacts.  This love of history led her to spend over a decade researching the family genealogy.  Andree was an avid reader and ‘organizer extraordinaire’ of family and school events.  She was often referred to as “the salt of the earth”. Her infectious laugh will remain with us always. We are fortunate to have all her travels documented in pictures, always a beautiful smile in every photo. She will be missed beyond words.   We would like to say special thanks to Joanne, Gloria, Angela and Bethell Hospice for the personal, loving care they gave Andree in her last few years and days.  Special people who made her life so much better at the end.

A catholic church service will be held at St. Alexander Church, 50 Pelham Town Square, Fonthill, (stalexander.on.ca) on Saturday morning, January 10th at 11 o’clock, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, 50 Woodlawn Road, Welland, followed by a reception at Club Richelieu Welland, 565 River Road, Welland, very near the cemetery.  Additionally, a celebration of life will be held in the spring, in a garden, under the sunshine where she was happiest.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society Peel (alzpeel.ca) or Bethell Hospice Foundation (bethellhospice.org).  Please take a moment and reflect on the importance of maintaining a healthy and active brain and body.

Condolence from Jeff Wallace on January 9th, 2026 3:10 pm

Yes far too early for my beautiful cousin Andree. As a teacher I’m sure she touched many lives of her students through her warmth, intelligence, and generosity of spirit. But her deeper and more meaningful influence I’m sure is felt by her family and friends. I always felt at ease with Andree; she had a unique quality of making people comfortable in her presence that I always appreciated. She was also a great partner at our family charades, always game for one of my outlandish scenarios and then building on it with her own wit. And of course I was witness to her boundless love for her husband and children which will carry on after her passing. I’m sorry we won’t be able to be there in person for her memorial service, but Jodie & Sam & I send our love and condolences from the West Coast and we’ll be remembering her fondly through our treasured memories of her. Much Love, Bill Tyler & Adam from Cousin Jeff, Jodie & Sam Wallace

Condolence from Diane Pitcher on January 9th, 2026 5:33 pm

My deepest condolences to Andree’s family . Andree was instrumental in hiring me at Holy Family with our principal and a fellow colleague Kim so many years ago. I’m forever grateful that I joined the Holy Family staff. We were teaching partners, colleagues, and friends. She has been taken far too young. May all the cherished memories you have bring a smile to your faces and warmth to your hearts in the days, months, and years to come.
