I have worked for some great people over the years and Murray was one of the best! It was always obvious that he cared deeply for all who had the opportunity to know him and work with him. When I was first assigned to Murray’s crew as a young “Probie” firefighter I was told I could be guaranteed four things. You would always do whatever you could do, whenever you could do it to help everyone that needed our help, you would almost certainly be appointed a nickname, you were going to learn a lot about racehorses and finally, Murray would look after you and keep you safe so that you would always return home after a long shift.

    he will be sadly missed

    Pete (Petey Pickle) Leonard

I am so sorry to hear of Murray’s passing. I certainly remember having him come to replace a TV and do work on the old fashion tower and being in the same community for many years. Hockey was also a connection we had when you were young Garry and Steve had just started to play. My sympathies are with you all.

Dear Garry and Chris, Brenda and Don
I wish I could be there to share some of the wonderful memories I have of Uncle Mur. The great times we had up at the cottage, dragging our toes in the sand while sitting on the tailgate of the station wagon that he always seem to drive. Going to Curly’s to play pinball with quarters that he would dole out (maybe just to keep us out of the adult’s hair!). I remember the ‘shop’ at the house that was always full of TV parts before he got into the fire department. He was always full of fun and laughter and will be missed. My heart is with you all through this tough time but I will remember him with nothing but the fondest of memories.

A great leader and a great firefighter. …Unconventional as hell! But Mur was always there for “his guys.” It was my honour to be among the many who saw him off at the funeral. He sure loved and was loved by a lot of people – and made EVERYONE laugh!

    Dear Iva and family,
We were saddened to hear of Murray’s death last week. he was a true individualist and a good friend. We have many wonderful stories of working with Murray both on the fire department and when helping rebuild the house. He could always make us laugh and did some of the most outrageously funny things that remain as treasures in our memories. He is irreplaceable and will be missed by us all.
    With our sincere condolences,
Gary and Judy, David and Laura Price.

I first met Murray when he drove a school bus. I was a kid going to Kleinburg Public School, and then Woodbridge High School.
My dad bought a new TV from him, and I met up with him again, five years ago, playing euchre with the seniors in Nobleton. I live in Kitchener now, and have missed the seniors, and the card playing.
Murray, I hope there are euchre games wherever you are.
My sincere condolences to his family. He will be missed.

I would like to offer belated condolences to the family of Murray Hilliard on his passing.

Our family lived next to the Hilliards on Hwy 49 during the war years, ’41 to ’45. Murray and I were in the same grade at the old red brick school house, beginning in Grade 2. Hilliard’s Jersey cow supplied our milk and I joined the boys to “harvest” the cut grass from the roadsides for the necessary winter feed supply.

Unfortunately I lost all contact with the Kleinburg group after we left but I still have the old school pictures as momentos of a rather unhappy time in my life.
